CPI International To Acquire Codan Satcom | NEWS.GNOM.ES

PALO ALTO, Calif. and NEWTON, South Australia, May 30, 2012 /NEWS.GNOM.ES/ ? CPI International Holding Corp. and its wholly owned subsidiary CPI International, Inc. (CPI), a leading provider of microwave, radio frequency (RF), power and control solutions for critical defense, communications, medical and other applications, today announced they have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Codan Satcom business from Codan Limited (ASX: CDA).? Codan Satcom is a prominent supplier of solid-state RF subsystems for satellite communications services to commercial and government end users.? Codan Satcom has operations in Newton, South Australia and Boalsburg, Pa.

(Logo: http://photos.NEWS.GNOM.ES.com/prnh/20060426/CPILOGO)

Under the terms of the agreement, CPI will acquire Codan Satcom for a payment of $9.0 million in cash, subject to certain adjustments, to be funded entirely from cash on hand.? If certain financial and other objectives are achieved in the two years following the acquisition, CPI has also agreed to make additional earnout payments to Codan of up to $4.5 million.? CPI will acquire certain of the Australian-based assets of Codan Satcom, as well as Codan Satcom?s Pennsylvania-based Locus Microwave operations.? The Pennsylvania-based operations were formerly Locus Microwave, Inc., a manufacturer of microwave radio products for satellite communications, before that company was acquired by Codan Limited in April 2009.

CPI intends to integrate the Codan Satcom business into its Communications & Medical Products Division in Ontario, Canada.? The Australian-based operations of Codan Satcom, which design and manufacture C-band and Ku-band subsystems and block-up converters (BUCs), will be relocated to CPI?s existing Canadian facilities over a period of approximately nine months.? The Pennsylvania-based Locus Microwave operations, which design and manufacture X-band and Ku-band BUCs, primarily for military communications applications, will remain in their current location and are expected to expand as CPI increases the capabilities of those operations.? CPI plans to retain a number of key research and development personnel from the Australian-based operations and establish a local engineering center for these employees.

?Codan Satcom has been recognized as a well-established world leader in solid-state RF subsystems for satellite communications for many years,? said Joe Caldarelli, chief executive officer of CPI. ??They have successfully served a global base of customers with specialized products and world-class manufacturing expertise.? CPI and Codan Satcom serve many of the same commercial and military communications customers, and Codan Satcom?s excellent reputation and worldwide coverage will both complement and expand CPI?s current business in the satellite communications market.? With the addition of Codan Satcom?s BUCs to CPI?s existing portfolio of solid-state and vacuum electron device-based satellite communications products, we believe CPI will offer customers the most complete line of satellite communications amplifiers operating at all satellite uplink frequencies and power levels.? Additionally, Codan Satcom?s Locus Microwave operations have developed excellent product coverage for X-band military communications applications, which are widely expected to enjoy significant growth over the next several years as numerous dedicated government X-band satellite communications networks, including the Wideband Global Satellite Communications (WGS) network, are deployed.?

Donald McGurk, managing director and chief executive officer of Codan Limited, stated, ?As we evaluated strategic alternatives for our Satcom business, Codan?s key objective was to ensure that we found a buyer who had the focus, resources and desire necessary to nurture and grow the satellite communications business to its fullest potential.? We feel that we found that buyer in CPI, and we are confident that our customers will continue to be served well under their management.? Sharing many of the same values and goals as Codan, CPI has the required expertise in manufacturing high-quality RF products, a global sales and distribution channel and decades of experience in providing excellent customer service for the demanding satellite communications market.? We are pleased that Codan Satcom is being acquired by CPI.?

The acquisition of Codan Satcom, which is expected to close by the end of June, is projected to contribute approximately $20 million in sales to CPI annually.? Once the relocation of the Australian-based operations has been completed and excluding the impact of purchase accounting, the acquisition is expected to be accretive for CPI.? The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions.

Ex-Cameron aide detained over alleged perjury

(AP) ? The former top media adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron was detained Wednesday on suspicion of perjury in the trial of a flamboyant ex-Scottish lawmaker ? the latest case tied to allegations of wrongdoing by British tabloid newspapers.

Andy Coulson, 44, was detained by Scottish police at his home in London over an accusation related to a high-profile case at Glasgow's High Court, when politician Tommy Sheridan was himself convicted of offering a false account after he successfully sued the now-defunct News of The World tabloid over its claim that he was embroiled in a sex-and-drugs scandal.

Coulson was editor of the tabloid when stories about Sheridan were published, and gave evidence in a 2010 trial which saw the Scottish legislator jailed for three years after a jury ruled he had committed perjury when he sued the newspaper.

In Scotland, which uses a different legal system to the rest of Britain, a suspect can be detained by police to answer questions before being formally arrested.

Glasgow's Strathclyde Police said Coulson has been detained early on Wednesday "on suspicion of committing perjury at the High Court in Glasgow."

The police department said the case was tied to Operation Rubicon, a Scottish police investigation into allegations of phone hacking, breaches of data protection and perjury by newspapers. Those inquiries are running separately to major investigations by London police into newspaper malpractice.

Coulson was arrested last year by London police in their investigation into phone hacking and is currently on police bail, meaning he must return to answer more questions from detective over the allegations in the near future. He has also testified to the country's media ethics inquiry.

The former editor quit his post at the tabloid in 2007 after a reporter and a private investigator were jailed over phone hacking offenses, but later the same year was appointed as communications director to Cameron, then Britain's opposition chief.

Coulson joined Cameron in London's Downing Street after he won office in 2010, but quit in January 2011 amid new revelations about the extent over phone hacking at his former newspaper.

Glasgow police confirmed that Coulson would be taken to a police station in Scotland to answer questions about the Sheridan case.

In 2006, Sheridan won a defamation suit against the News of the World after it claimed he had visited a swingers' club, had taken part in orgies and used cocaine. However, a year after his courtroom victory against the newspaper, police arrested and charged Sheridan with perjury in connection with the hearing.

The subsequent trial riveted Scotland, with its lurid allegations about sex clubs and tabloid skullduggery.

Sheridan, who defended himself, accused the News of The World of deliberately attempting to smear him because it was opposed to his politics. The lawmaker first represented the Scottish Socialist Party in Scotland's Parliament, but later broke away to form his own Solidarity party.

As he gave evidence, Coulson insisted he had ordered his reporters to work within the law, and said that the newspaper had no axe to grind with Sheridan. "I had no interest in destroying you, Mr. Sheridan," Coulson told the 2010 court hearing,

(AP) ? North Korea is reporting a serious drought that could worsen already critical food shortages, but help is unlikely to come from the United States and South Korea following Pyongyang's widely criticized rocket launch.

North Korea has had little rain since April 27, with the country's western coastal areas particularly hard hit, according to a government weather agency in Pyongyang. The dry spell threatened to damage crops, officials said, as the country enters a critical planting season and as food supplies from the last harvest dwindle.

In at least one area of South Phyongan Province where journalists from The Associated Press were allowed to visit, the sun-baked fields appeared parched and cracked, and farmers complained of extreme drought conditions. Deeply tanned men, and women in sun bonnets, worked over cabbages and corn seedlings. Farmers cupped individual seedlings as they poured water from blue buckets onto the parched red soil.

"I've been working at the farm for more than 30 years, but I have never experienced this kind of severe drought," An Song Min, a farmer at the Tokhae Cooperative Farm in the Nampho area, told the AP.

It was not clear whether the conditions around Nampho were representative of a wider region. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said it had not yet visited the affected regions to confirm the extent and severity of the reported drought.

North Korea has suffered chronic food shortages for the past two decades because of economic and agricultural mismanagement as well as natural disasters. A famine in the 1990s killed an estimated hundreds of thousands of people.

The country's past appeals for food aid have been met with some skepticism, however, amid concerns that aid would be diverted to the military and Pyongyang elite without reaching the hungry.

The U.S. government suspended food handouts to North Korea in 2009 after Pyongyang expelled foreign food distribution monitors.

In February, the U.S. reversed course and agreed to provide 240,000 metric tons of food aid in exchange for a freeze in nuclear and missile activities.

However, the deal collapsed after North Korea launched a long-range rocket last month in what it called a failed attempt to send a satellite into space to study the weather.

The launch was widely criticized by the United States and others as a thinly disguised attempt to test missile technology in violation of both the U.S. food deal and U.N. bans on North Korean ballistic tests. The launch drew U.N. Security Council condemnation.

"The United States would like to get to a place where we could once again contemplate providing nutritional assistance to North Korea," Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy for North Korea, said last week. "Sadly, that is not the case right now, in the wake of their decision, in March, to announce" the rocket launch.

South Korea's conservative government has cut off large-scale direct food aid to North Korea since taking office in 2008, saying Pyongyang should first take steps toward nuclear disarmament.

North Korea's dry spell is expected to last until the end of the month, the country's State Hydrometeorological Administration said.

Bureaucrats and workers have been mobilized to irrigate farms, repair wells and keep water-pumping equipment operating, state media reported.

Seedlings are being moved from seed beds to the fields, where they need enough moisture to form strong roots, Percy Misika, the Food and Agriculture Organization's representative for China, North Korea and Mongolia, said Monday from Beijing.

"Any dry spell at this critical time means the seedlings are definitely going to wilt away, and there will be no harvest at the end of the day," he said.

Misika said FAO officials are trying to visit areas suffering from a lack of rain. "If it's going to last for one or two weeks more, it's going to be critical, but if it's a shorter period of time there could be hope," he said.

Droughts are common in spring, winter and autumn in North Korea, the FAO said in a special report late last year. Climate change has led to more extreme weather, making winters colder, summers packed with more intense rain and typhoons, and droughts more frequent and prolonged, it said.

South Korea's Korea Meteorological Administration said it could not confirm the dry spell without on-the-ground equipment, though satellite photos have shown no big rain clouds over North Korea since late April. North Korean dispatches sent to an international weather center also show the country has had little rain over the past month, spokesman Jang Hyun-sik said in Seoul.

Durbin to launch "open, transparent and nonpartisan search" to replace Fitzgerald

DURBIN STATEMENT ON CHOOSING THE NEXT US ATTORNEY FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF ILLINOIS [WASHINGTON, D.C.] ? U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement regarding the process for choosing the next U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois: ?I?m committed to conducting an open, transparent and nonpartisan search for the next U.S. Attorney for the Northern District and, over the next few weeks, I will work with Senator Kirk to establish a formal search process to fill the vacancy left by Patrick Fitzgerald?s resignation. We will announce that process once it is established.? ?I?ve spoken to Attorney General Eric Holder and he assured me that, in consultation with Patrick Fitzgerald, he will name a strong and competent Acting U.S. Attorney to serve until an eventual nominee is confirmed by the Senate. I?m completely confident that the U.S. Attorney?s office will continue its important work during this transition process.? ?The Northern District of Illinois deserves a U.S. Attorney beholden only to the law of land. We will find a successor who will continue Patrick Fitzgerald?s good work.? Traditionally, the senior Senator of the President?s party, in consultation with the junior Senator, makes recommendations to the President for a nominee for the position of U.S. Attorney. In this case, Senator Durbin will submit recommendations to President Obama after consulting with Senator Kirk. The approval of both home state Senators is required for the Senate Judiciary Committee to take up and consider any U.S. Attorney nominee. On average, it takes between 2-4 months to confirm a U.S. Attorney once that nomination is sent to the Senate. -30-

Applying for a Patent: Save Money on a Patent Search Process

The most important thing is to do a thorough search. If during your investigation you find possible infringement or prior elements of your device or mechanism for which a patent has already been issued, be truthful. It may not be as bad as it looks, but be honest and be sure to get copies of these questionable issues. It is not for you to determine this at site value but for your legal counsel to make that determination prior to the initial writing of the patent. It may not be as bad as it looks, but just be sure to get the drawings and addendums attached. Actually, those areas of question may be used to your advantage, and in some cases, used to point out the important but subtle differences in working features between your new device and the old-style one.

Got this crazy twitch in my eye?

Dehydration can cause vitamin/mineral loss, and cause cramping in muscles and involuntary muscle twitching. Once you are noticeably thirsty, you are already medically past the mark of being technically dehydrated. Get a multivitamin with complex Vitamin B?s & vitamin K (sorry but it isn?t potassium, by the way, that causes twitching in the eyes). Also make sure you are drinking enough water based liquids, and especially more so if you live in a hot, humid climate or work outside in the sun. Alcohol also depletes your balances, so drink extra if you?ve been out partying?!! (RN of 28 years)

Obama Admin defends Warrentless Cell Phone Tracking with a straight face

special to Drug War Chronicle by investigative journalist Clarence Walker, cwalkerinvestigate@gmail.com In the wake of the US Supreme Court?s January decision in United States v. Jones, in which the high court forbade the warrantless use of GPS tracking devices to surveil people?s movements, law enforcement and the Obama administration are scrambling ? not to find ways to comply with the spirit of the ruling, but to find ways around it. Police in many states have switched tactics by obtaining mobile data to zero in on someone?s prior movement and by tracking them through their cell phones, usually without a warrant. Whenever a cell phone is used, it "pings" an electronic signal to the nearest cell phone tower, allowing law enforcement to use the cell phone to find or track people. And cell phones containing GPS devices, which are increasingly common, "ping" constantly. In April, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) released anextensive study of state, federal, and local law enforcement?s surveillance practices that illustrate how police track citizens through their cell phones. The findings were staggering. Warrantless cell phone tracking "has become a powerful and widely used surveillance tool for police officials, with hundreds of departments, large and small, often using it aggressively with little or no court oversight," the report found. After poring over 5,500 pages of records in responses from over 200 local law enforcement agencies, the ACLU researchers reported that "only a tiny minority" ? 10 agencies total ? had obtained a warrant before tracking someone through his or her cell phone. "What we have learned is disturbing," said ACLU staff attorney Catherine Crump, who helped file public information requests with some 385 law enforcement agencies. "The government should have to get a warrant before tracking a cell phone. Instead, what we found was that the cops track people with no supervision, or in some cases, mostly drug cases, the cop will go to court and only show that it would be relevant to an investigation, which is a lower standard." The ACLU is calling for law enforcement agencies to desist from using cell phone tracking without a warrant, and is calling on state and federal lawmakers to pass legislation requiring a warrant before police use location tracking in non-emergency situations. A bill to address the problem is pending in Congress. Senate Bill 1212, the Geolocation Privacy and Surveillance (GPS) Act, is sponsored in the Senate by Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Mark Kirk (R-IL). Companion legislation in the House, House Resolution 2168, is sponsored by Reps. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Peter Welch (D-VT) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI.). The bills would require law enforcement agents to obtain a warrant in order to access location information. Another Senate effort, Judiciary Committee chair Senator Patrick Leahy?s (D-VT) Electronic Communications Privacy Act Amendments Act, Senate Bill 2011, offers a partial repair of the problem. It includes a warrant requirement for real-time tracking, but not for historical location information. The Obama administration disagrees that any action is needed. At a State of the Mobile Net conference held in May, Justice Department Deputy Assistant Attorney Jason Weinstein argued, "[t]he need for such warrantless cell phone tracking is important so it won?t cripple the government and law enforcement." The administration?s lawyers insist that when a person turns on a cell phone, the information from the phone is transmitted through a third-party, such as the wireless carrier, and the user thus has no "expectation of privacy." Warrantless cell phone tracking "should be illegal," said Washington, DC, appellate attorney Stephan Leckar, who successfully represented DC nightclub owner Antoine Jones in the case cited above. In that case, the Supreme Court reversed Jones? conviction and sentence of life without parole in a cocaine trafficking case after they found substantial evidence that the FBI placed a GPS device on Jones vehicle for 28 days without a search warrant. When police monitored Jones vehicle without a warrant, the court said, "This violated his Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure." According to Leckar, the "third-party" doctrine is a means for law enforcement to get around the Fourth Amendment. "As the law reads," he said, the ?third-party? doctrine doesn?t violate the Fourth Amendment. To change this, people will have to petition Congress to change that doctrine."

Police halt anti-GM wheat protest

Anti-GM protesters who had planned to "decontaminate" a field of modified wheat in Hertfordshire have been stopped from entering by a police line.

The Take the Flour Back group said it failed because the crop in Harpenden, created to deter aphids - a wheat pest - was "hidden behind a fortress".

An order banning protesters from entering the site was issued on Friday.

They say crops could contaminate the surrounding area. Site owner Rothamsted Research says that is highly unlikely.

Police say that two men, who were arrested for trespassing in the banned area, are being questioned at a Hertfordshire police station.

The protesters had planned to rip up the crops.

"In the past, kids, grannies, and everyone in between has decontaminated GM trial sites together," Take the Flour Back's Kate Bell said.

"Here at the beginning of a new resistance to this obsolete technology, we see GM hidden behind a fortress.

They were never going to get through.

The leaders of the action, Take the Flour Back, had acknowledged that in advance. The security presence was too overwhelming.

The march reached the police and got no further. Any dreams of reaching the plot of GM wheat were dashed so the protesters sat down and chanted "no GM" instead.

One woman protestor had adorned herself with the word "biodiversity" in body paint. A young man with a banner started up a siren but a police officer pointed out that this would alarm the horses so he agreed not to use it. It was that kind of event - no scuffles, no violence.

And the GM trial survived. The security plan triumphed. At least for today. The challenge will be to maintain this level of protection in the weeks and months ahead.

"We wanted to do the responsible thing and remove the threat of GM contamination - sadly it wasn't possible to do that effectively today."

The order, enforced by police officers around the perimeters of the site, banned protesters from entering the land as well as from walking on a public footpath that runs through it.

It was successfully granted to St Albans District Council after it was approved by the home secretary.

Take the Flour Back said 400 protesters - made up of "growers, bakers and families from across England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Belgium" - met at nearby Rothamsted Park at midday.

Police say there were up to 200 protesters.

Take the Flour Back said protesters then linked arms "and walked calmly towards the site before being stopped by police lines".

They sat down in front of officers for half an hour and shouted protest chants before returning to the park to continue their demonstration.

Despite the two arrests, police said there were "no disturbances in the area".

BBC correspondent Sophie Hutchinson said the protest at Rothamsted Park - policed by a few officers dotted around - had "the air of a festival" and featured music, singing and a number of speakers.

"We feel that GM presents potential risks," protester Tom Fenton told BBC News.

Protester Tom Fenton: "You can see the UK consumers don't want this."

"There's uncertainty about the health effect of this - there's been no adequate long-term health safety testing."

Rothamsted Research says GM is "just one tool in the toolbox to create more sustainable food".

But Mr Fenton said: "When the exploration of that tool compromises the existence for organic agriculture and compromise the existence of non-GM agriculture then it's just not fair to do so."

Opponents fear that, because the trial is taking place in the open air, the surrounding area could be contaminated.

Professor John Pickett, a principal investigator at Rochester Research, told BBC News there was "a very, very remote chance that anything should get out".

"All it would mean was that some other plant - if it ever did miraculously transfer into another plant - was making a smell like the aphid."

He said that, using genetic modification, the pheromone for the aphid had been put into the wheat to frighten aphids away.

Professor Morris Maloney says the protesters' claims are "scientifically inaccurate"

More importantly, the pheromone also attracted other insects to attack aphids, he said.

"It's crucially important, as we try to provide more food for the world, to protect our crops," he added.

The crop - developed with genes from the mint plant - is due to grow until September.

Speaking before the protest, St Albans District Council's executive leader, Julian Daly, said it had taken action to stop a demonstration on Rothamsted Research's land that "may put historic crop trials at risk".

"Continuous trials have been under way there for over 160 years and are of international significance for the future of world farming," he added.

Rothamsted has previously pleaded with anti-GM campaigners not to destroy their experimental plots.

SpaceX capsule docks at space station, opens new era

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Fri May 25, 2012 11:07pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - Astronauts aboard the International Space Station captured the SpaceX Dragon cargo ship and guided the privately owned craft into a docking berth on Friday, opening a new chapter in the U.S. space program.

The unmanned capsule was the first commercial spaceship to reach the orbital outpost.

"This really is the beginning of a new era in commercial spaceflight," said Alan Lindenmoyer, who manages NASA's commercial space transportation programs.

Using the station's 58-foot long (17.7-meter) robotic crane, NASA astronaut Don Pettit snared Dragon at 9:56 a.m. EDT as the two spacecraft zoomed 250 miles over northwest Australia at 17,500 miles per hour.

"?It looks like we've got us a dragon by the tail," Pettit radioed to NASA Mission Control in Houston.

The capsule, built and operated by Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, is the first of two new commercial freighters NASA will use to ferry cargo to the $100 billion space station following the retirement of its space shuttles last year. Rather than building and flying its own ships to the station, the agency is hiring private companies to do the work.

The Dragon capsule is carrying about 1,200 pounds (544 kg) of food, water, clothing and supplies for the station crew, who were scheduled to open the hatch on Saturday.

The spaceship will be repacked with more than 1,300 pounds (590 kg) of equipment to come back to Earth and depart the station on May 31. It would splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern California later that day.

?"As a country we should be very proud," NASA's space station program manager Mike Suffredini told reporters after the station crew attached Dragon to the Harmony connecting node shortly after noon EDT.

"We've taken a capability that this agency has nurtured for many, many years and combined that with a different thought process in the design and development of spacecraft," Suffredini said.

The United States plans to use a similar process to buy commercial flight services for its astronauts as well, breaking Russia's monopoly on flying crews to the station.

"I don't have words enough to express the level of excitement and elation that we feel here at SpaceX," company founder and chief executive Elon Musk said after the docking.

"There's just so much that could have gone wrong and it went right. It's just a fantastic day," he said.

Musk said he got a congratulatory call from President Barack Obama after Dragon reached orbit on its second and most likely final test flight. "Caller ID was blocked, so at first I thought it was a telemarketer," Musk quipped in a Twitter message.

LASER GLITCH

The cone-shaped capsule blasted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Tuesday.

After a successful pass by the station on Thursday to test its navigation and communications systems, Dragon proceeded at a snail's pace on Friday, stopping, starting and occasionally retreating to make sure it could be controlled.

At one point, the SpaceX ground operations team in Hawthorne, California, halted Dragon to adjust the capsule's laser imaging system, which it uses to see the station.

Sensors were picking up stray reflections from the station's Japanese module, said NASA mission commentator Josh Byerly.

Dragon ended up using just one of its two laser imaging systems for the final approach to the station, a bit dicey because a failure would have triggered an automatic abort.

But one eye and a pair of thermal imagers was all Dragon needed to position itself 30 feet beneath the station and within arm's reach of the robotic crane that would haul it up for berthing.

PRIVATE DELIVERIES

Dragon's successful test flight will clear SpaceX to begin its 12-flight, $1.6 billion contract with NASA to fly cargo to and from the station.

A second freighter being developed by Orbital Sciences Corp is expected to debut later this year. Orbital holds a second NASA cargo delivery contract worth $1.9 billion.

The Obama administration is pushing Congress to embrace similar partnership arrangement for commercial space taxis to fly astronauts as well.

Legislators last year halved Obama's request for space taxi design work to $406 million. Proposed spending plans for the year beginning October 1 would cut the White House's $830 million request to no more than $525 million.

The Dragon docking marked a major step for the budding role of private enterprise in space travel.

"I think this really is going to be recognized as a significantly historical step forward in space travel, so I hope we're the first of many to come," Musk told reporters.

Is Prostate Cancer Screening Truly Harmful? | Psychology Today

Dr. Timothy Wilt, a member of the United States Preventive Services Task Force, stood in front of the American Urological Association audience and explained why the task force could not recommend that men undergo routine PSA screening. At most, he explained, the test had been shown to benefit one out of 1000 men. Meanwhile, the test would cause hundreds of men to experience anxiety, and scores of them to experience impotence and incontinence from unnecessary treatments.

?

Twenty minutes later, I stood behind the same podium and asked the audience members to raise their hands if they disagreed with the task force's conclusion. Ninety percent expressed their skepticism. What happened in the time between Wilt's presentation and mine reveals a great deal about why experts cannot agree whether screening tests, like the PSA in middle-age men or mammograms in 40-year-old women, bring more benefit than harm, and about what psychological forces impede our ability, as a society, to figure out what basic bundle of healthcare services all insurance companies ought to pay for.

?

Wilt?s presentation was a model of scientific clarity. He explained that only two randomized clinical trials were conducted with enough scientific rigor to provide useful estimates of whether the PSA test saves lives. One trial showed no benefit and the other revealed the one in 1000 number which the task force took as the best case scenario. Wilt was followed on stage by Ruth Etzioni, a biostatistician at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.? Etzioni presented a statistical model suggesting that the PSA test benefited many more than one in 1000 men.

?

Psychology was already at work. After hearing two scientific presentations, one emphasizing randomized trials (which physicians typically considered to be the gold standard of medical evidence) and another focusing on statistical models (which physicians typically consider too abstract to capture clinical reality), urologists found themselves embracing the scientific merits of the statistical models.

?

In a famous1979 study, 3 Stanford psychologists recruited students who held strong opinions about the death penalty, and exposed each of them to two hypothetical research studies, one suggesting that capital punishment deters crimes and one pointing to the opposite conclusion.? All saw critiques of each study, as well as responses to the critiques.? The result?? The more information students saw, the more polarized their opinions became.? Pro-death penalty students became even more in favor of the death penalty, while those previously opposed to the death penalty became even more opposed to it.

?

Not liking the task force's conclusion, urologists viewed the randomized clinical trials with deep skepticism, a skepticism they did not direct towards the equally shaky statistical model. We see what we hope to see.

?

One more presenter stepped behind the podium before my presentation: Capt. Mark Kelly, retired NASA astronaut and, just as famously, supportive spouse of Rep. Gabby Giffords. Kelly charmed the audience with the story of how he was diagnosed with prostate cancer four years earlier, at the age of 44, and was then cured by a urologist who removed his cancerous gland. Looking no worse for the wear, and joking about the benefits of not having to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, Kelly was living proof of the benefits of PSA testing.

?

But did the PSA test save Kelly's life? Psychology was at work again. The task force estimate of one in 1000 lives saved was not established by measuring how many men, out of 1000, are diagnosed with prostate cancer by the PSA test but, instead, by estimating how many of those 1000 men are not only diagnosed but are also cured of a cancer that would otherwise have killed them. When a 71-year-old man has his prostate removed to treat localized cancer, it is impossible to know whether his life was saved by the procedure. If he dies at age 78 of a heart attack, for instance, no one can say for certain whether his prostate cancer, if untreated, would have killed him before then. The vast majority of men who undergo prostatectomy, in fact, do not live longer because of the operation. But here is where psychology comes into play: virtually every man who undergoes this arduous procedure is convinced that the operation has saved his life.? Those who experience impotence or incontinence from the treatment are likely even more convinced of its benefits.? How else can they overcome the cognitive dissonance? of willingly undergoing a procedure with such significant side effects?

?

We may never know the true benefits of PSA screening. It is almost impossible to conduct a clinical trial in which those men randomized to the ?control group? are willing to forego screening tests for the duration of the trial, meaning that the trials will inevitably underestimate the benefits and harms of PSA screening. That leaves us with statistical models that will only confirm people?s pre-existing biases.

?

Our best hope is to conduct high-quality randomized trials of newer, potentially better screening tests, trials in which men in the control group are not allowed to obtain the new screening test until the trial is complete. No matter how promising the new test appears to be, physicians and insurance companies need to agree not to offer, or pay for, the test outside of the trial.

?

Meanwhile, men need to decide whether the unproven benefits of the PSA test outweigh its proven harms. This is no simple decision, as Capt. Kelly's story makes clear.

?

At a 50-year-old physician myself, now six years older than Kelly was at the time of diagnosis, I have decided to hold off on PSA testing. Meanwhile, I will stick with tests that yield more certain benefits. That means the word colonoscopy will be taking on new relevance in my life very soon.

How to Host a Tea Tasting | Verdant Tea

Have you ever had one of those experiences where you take the first sip of a tea and it is so moving, so intriguing, that you are tempted to pick up the phone and call a friend to come over to drink with you? There is just something wonderful about drinking tea with others. Indeed, the whole culture of tea in China centers around hospitality and the social interaction of a shared pot.

To drink tea alone can be a wonderful and introspective journey, a meditation on beauty through the synergies of flavor, smell, and taste. To drink tea among friends under the right circumstances magnifies the sensations of the tea, making it easier to see the beauty that tea has to offer.

This is possible because as you taste your tea and describe your experience, others can learn from you and look for the sensations you pinpointed. You can do the same by listening to friends describe their experience. Fine tea presents a vast spectrum of sensations, and we are all individually attuned to different elements of flavor, texture and smell based on our past experience. By drinking among friends, you are able to widen the spectrum you perceive and respect the tea more fully.

In addition, when you personally feel that a tea is wonderful, having that feeling confirmed strengthens your conviction and predisposes you to more carefully tasting. If you only drink the tea alone, you may love it, but may also have the vague suspicion that you imagined the whole thing. Hearing praise from others makes you more open to enjoying something. Just consider how infectious a cheering crowd can be at the end of a concert, or how quickly laughter spreads if a few people start.

The easiest way to create the conditions needed for communal enjoyment and feedback in tea is to organize your own tea tasting among sympathetic friends. All the better to make the tasting a monthly event so that you can become really comfortable with the way your companions taste and describe tea. Organizing a tasting is a pretty simple task with only a few basic considerations to start:

1. Pick a time that makes sense. If you want to try three or four teas, and you plan on steeping them out Chinese style, which will yield much more complex cups than Western style brewing, you will need at least two hours, with the option of lingering for three hours. Find a time that does not overlap a meal, or you will have hungry over-caffeinated guests. The best times are in the morning around 9AM, after a good breakfast, 2 in the afternoon, giving people a chance to digest their lunch, or about 7:30PM, after dinner. This kind of timing makes sure that nobody has to leave because of hunger or tiredness. Make sure to inform your guests that they are investing at least two hours into the tasting, and to come already fed.

2. Find a comfortable arrangement for guests. It is difficult to brew for and accommodate more than 6-7 people at a time without help. If everyone can sit around a table with comfortable chairs, this is best. Hard chairs will make people restless after a few hours. Low tables and living room chairs work reasonably well, though if any guests have back trouble, bending down to the low table can be difficult. Pillows on the floor is a good alternative in a pinch. Some low music can be nice so that if people feel like concentrating on the tea without making conversation, they won?t feel awkward.

3. Consider the supplies you will need beforehand. Besides, of course, fine tea capable of inspiring exciting discussion, you will need water and light snacks. Some snack food is needed to counteract more intense teas, allowing people to continue drinking without feeling weak. Good possibilities include shortbread cookies, dried fruit and nuts, and butter crackers. The idea is to present flavor-neutral but energy rich foods that will not leave a lingering taste on the palate. Overly savory food can taint a palate, as can overly sweet food. Of course, teas can be paired with foods selectively and thoughtfully, but that is a different party. For water, you will want to have a filter at the least, or large gallon jugs of spring water. Tap water is usually too heavy with metallic tastes. Filtering the water allows you to keep the minerals needed to act as a foundation for the tea, but remove distracting tastes. Try not use distilled water or reverse osmosis water if possible, as they produce very flat and thin tea.

4. Double check your tea equipment. Make sure that you have a water boiler of reasonable size, or are close enough to a stove to reheat a kettle throughout the tasting. Count your cups and be sure to have enough for everyone, plus one or two extra in the unlikely event that one breaks. Small cups are always best for long tastings, as they allow people to try just a taste of each steeping, drink a lot of teas and not fill up too quickly. If you don?t have small Chinese tea cups, shot glasses are a viable alternative, as are ramekins, soy sauce bowls, etc.

5. Set up your equipment. It is best to have everything ready to start brewing before guests arrive. Pour out the tea leaves you will be using into small dishes and set them on the table to be admired. It will help build anticipation for what is to come. Have everyone?s cup set out, and provide paper and pencils for anyone who wants to take notes. Jotting down notes, diagrams or even pictures can be a helpful way for people to remember the tea, and helps give people a place to start discussion.

6. Do some research. Try to learn enough about the teas you are serving to tell a few stories. The reason that we provide so many stories about tea on the blog and at tastings is because they truly do enhance the experience of tasting. Learn what farm grew the tea you are drinking, how and when they picked the leaves. Learn the origin stories for teas like Pu?er, Tieguanyin, Big Red Robe, etc. It makes tasting way more fun and fills any gaps in the conversation. If you are not so comfortable with story-telling, you can always read off the stories and product descriptions from your tea supplier.

7. This is part of research ? taste the teas beforehand. When you set up two or three teas to present at a tasting, you want to be sure that their flavors are complimentary. You also want to nail down proper brewing. Every tea merchant has recommendations on brewing, but ultimately, exact specifications will depend on the pH of the water, the exact shape of the leaves used, the amount of insulation provided by your brewing vessel, etc. Don?t be intimidated by these tiny variables. Instead, feel liberated and confident to experiment. There is no right answer in tea brewing, only variations. Do what feels and tastes right to you. Merchant suggestions are often a good baseline to give you an idea of general time (2 seconds, three minutes, etc) and temperature, but feel free to interpret liberally. A practice run of your tasting will give you the confidence to brew and present the teas with care.

Those are a few of the suggestions collected from conducting many, many tastings. For actual brewing tips, check out our brewing page. The most important thing is to enjoy the tea to its fullest extent and make sure that your guests have the opportunity to do the same. Don?t be surprised if your tasting becomes a monthly, and then weekly, event full of lively discussion, excitement and sharing of tea all around.

Here are a few suggested tasting itineraries and themes to help give you inspiration:

Tasting focused around synergy of flavor:
Any tasting should consider the way that the flavor and texture of one tea affects the next teas you taste. Some pairings in particular make good counter-compliments. In general, lightest to darkest is a good rule. One suggestion from our offerings breaks that rule for the sake of interesting aftertaste experience:

Start with our Mi Lan Xiang Dancong, then pair the incense and mineral textures with a sweet and crisp departure through the Laoshan Dragonwell Green or Jingshan Green. Finish with a tea to draw out the sweetness of the green tea and the floral perfume of the Dancong, our Hand Picked Tieguanyin.

Tasting focused around seasonality:
Trying autumn, summer and spring teas from the same regions can be a great way to more deeply understand both the region and the effect of weather. It is an excersize in subtle tasting that rewards you with interesting flavor differences. For example, try:

Autumn Harvest Laoshan Green, and Autumn Harvest Laoshan Dragonwell. once you get an idea of the hearty bean flavor of the autumn, try the two spring harvest Laoshan teas and see how the crispness of autumn translates into a sweet sparkle in the spring.

Tasting focused around regional flavor profiles:
Every region of China will give an innate flavor to the teas that are produced there. This is a result of the soil and the weather. The clearest example is an exploration of the teas of Yunnan, which all have a special linen-like texture and cinnamon sweetness no matter what kind of tea is made:

Try the Jingshan Green, then the Yunnan Jin Jun Mei or Golden Fleece, and wrap up with a sheng pu?er like Artisan Revival.

Tasting focused around aging of tea:
Pu?er grows in complexity and depth over time. This does not mean that young pu?er is less interesting. Actually it is quite fun to try several pu?ers of different ages and see how they are different. This gives you more reference for tasting the way a brick might age over time and help you become a better ?investor? in pu?er. We suggest:

Starting with the younger 2006 Artisan Revival Sheng, then trying the 2004 Yiwu, and finally the 2003 Farmer?s Co-operative Sheng. You could also try the tasting with shu pu?er, starting with the 2008 Xingyang Nuggets, then the 2004 Tea trail, and finally the 1998 Xingyang Golden Leaf.
