McCain: Don't expect surprises in upcoming debate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Sen. John McCain says not to expect any surprises in this week's first presidential debate because the televised confrontations nowadays are so heavily scripted.

McCain was President Barack Obama's challenger in 2008. He says if he were running against Obama again, he could easily guess ? and prepare for ? the first half dozen questions because they are usually so obvious.

McCain says he still thinks debates are good for the country and the elections, and he predicted that Wednesday's debate between Obama and Republican Mitt Romney will attract the largest number of viewers in history. But, he says, if Americans are expecting to catch any revealing moments, they might be disappointed because "frankly the candidates are too well prepared."

McCain spoke on CNN's "State of the Union."

Why Are Live Auctions So Popular?

It seems like pretty much everyone these days is jumping on top of the online auction bandwagon. Almost every day a brand new auction website is released and shoppers flock towards it in search of ever greater bargains.

But why are live auctions so popular? Well, this is one of the bigger questions surrounding online auctions, and not one which we could hope to answer completely in the limited time and space we have available to us. But allow us to at least have a go at covering some of the basics.

The term "live auction" is used to describe a lot on an auction website which is still open for new bids. In other words the auction is still live and the sale has not yet been finalised. Almost every auction website now conforms to a system whereby the auctioneers will also give you a handy little countdown clock, which will tell you exactly when this auction will cease to be live. When the time on that clock has counted down to 0, there will be no more bidding permitted on that lot and the online auction will close.

This countdown is one of the things that contribute towards making live auctions so popular. The fact that shoppers and would be bidders can go onto any auction website and see a useful clock which tells them how much longer they have if they wish to bid on the lot, is a common theme which consumers love to see. A live countdown like this is a great way to build up an excitement and a buzz around an online auction. Just ask any online shopper who uses an auction website, and they will all tell you the same thing. That the dying moments of a live auction are some of the most exciting moments in the online shopping experience.

Many online shoppers and bidders say that the excitement and anticipation which they experience in the closing seconds of an online auction, is the single biggest element which keeps them coming back. And of course, this build up of excitement is only made possible thanks to the presence of the countdown clock.

Sitting and watching the final seconds count down and wondering whether you are going to be lucky enough to win the lot, or whether a rival bidder will come in and pip you at the post, is what makes live auctions so exciting to be a part of.

Realistically however, if you came into this article wondering why live auctions are so popular among online shoppers, then the chances are you already know the answer to this. The fact is that if you have ever pondered this question, then you are likely as not, just as big an online bidder as the rest of us! Of course, there are many, many more things which contribute towards making live auctions on an auction website so popular. But what it all ultimately boils down to is the blend it provides between entertainment and shopping.

BidGrid are an innovative auction site where it's the lowest unique bid that wins. See how it works.

(AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

(AP) ? The mystery surrounding the man behind the crudely produced anti-Islamic video that sparked violence in the Middle East deepened when he appeared in court and identified himself by yet another name.

Arrested on Thursday in Los Angeles after authorities said he violated his probation from a 2010 check fraud conviction, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula told a judge his real name was Mark Basseley Youssef. He said he had been using that name since 2002, even though he went by Nakoula in his fraud case.

Court documents filed in Orange County Superior Court show he was granted a name change petition in 2002 and legally changed his name to Mark Basseley Youssef because "Nakoula is a girl's name and it cause me troubles."

On Friday, federal prosecutors said court documents will now reflect Youssef's real name. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said Youssef didn't give that name when he was charged two years ago. Also, he had a driver's license under Nakoula, authorities said.

"He did not provide his true legal name at the time of prosecution," Dugdale said.

The full story about Youssef and the video "Innocence of Muslims" still isn't known more than two weeks after violence erupted in Egypt and elsewhere in the Arab world where at least 50 people have died in protests related to the film.

Citing a lengthy pattern of deception and the potential to flee, U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal ordered Youssef to remain in prison without bond until another judge can hold a hearing to determine if he broke the terms of his probation.

"The court has a lack of trust in this defendant at this time," Segal said.

Prosecutors noted Youssef had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases. He could face new charges that carry a maximum two-year prison term.

After his 2010 conviction, Youssef was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer, though prosecutors said none of the violations involved the Internet. He also wasn't supposed to use any name other than his true legal name without the prior written approval of his probation officer.

Three names, however, have been associated with Youssef this month alone.

The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile spoke to media outlets including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.

The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.

Some of the false statements in Youssef's alleged probation violations had to do with the film, Dugdale said. Youssef told probation officials his role was just writing the script, and denied going by the name Sam Bacile in connection with the film, Dugdale said.

Before going into hiding, Youssef acknowledged to the AP that he was involved with the film but said he only worked on logistics and management.

Youssef, a Christian originally from Egypt, then went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer, which depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester. He met with federal probation officials two weeks ago, was led out of his home in suburban Cerritos in the middle of the night, flanked by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and cloaked in heavy clothing to protect his identity.

Youssef came out of hiding Thursday for his court appearance, although the news media were banned from the courtroom and reporters had to watch the proceedings on a TV in a nearby courthouse. No photos were allowed.

Youssef wore beige pants and a collared shirt when he was led into the courtroom handcuffed and shackled. He appeared relaxed, smiling at one point before the hearing and conferring with his attorney.

Youssef's attorney, Steven Seiden, sought to have the hearing closed and his client released on $10,000 bail. He argued Youssef has checked in with his probation officer frequently and made no attempts to leave Southern California.

Seiden was concerned that Youssef would be in danger in federal prison because of Muslim inmates, but prosecutors said he likely would be placed in protective custody.

Lawrence Rosenthal, a constitutional and criminal law professor at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, said it was "highly unusual" for a judge to order immediate detention on a probation violation for a nonviolent crime, but if there were questions about Youssef's identity it was more likely.

"When the prosecution doesn't really know who they're dealing with, it's much easier to talk about flight," Rosenthal said. "I've prosecuted individuals who'd never given a real address. You don't know who you're dealing with, and you're just going to have very limited confidence about their ability to show up in court."

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Youssef, and a Pakistani cabinet minister has offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills him.

First Amendment advocates have defended Youssef's right to make the film while condemning its content. Federal officials likely will face criticism from those who say Youssef's free speech rights were trampled by his arrest on a probation violation.

In arguing that Youssef is a possible flight risk, Dugdale said Youssef couldn't even reveal something as fundamental as his real name.

"He's a person who simply can't be trusted," he said.

We know first-hand that the new Kindle Paperwhite is a stunning little device, but how did it get so good? The Amazon employee's who developed the reader have gotten together to explain. Interestingly enough, they cite the ultimate goal as being able to make a device that sort of "disappears" as you use it. That's going to be tough with a screen that pretty. [Slashgear] More »

TEXT-S&P summary: CapitaCommercial Trust

(The following statement was released by the rating agency)

Sept 28 -

===============================================================================

Summary analysis -- CapitaCommercial Trust ------------------------ 28-Sep-2012

CREDIT RATING: BBB+/Stable/-- Country: Singapore

Primary SIC: Real estate

===============================================================================

Credit Rating History:

20-Oct-2010 BBB+/-- BBB+/--

===============================================================================

Rationale

The rating on CapitaCommercial Trust (CCT) reflects the REIT's good quality

asset portfolio and its solid market position in the Singapore commercial

space sector. The unencumbered nature of almost 70% of CCT's total investment

properties (valued at Singapore dollar {S$} 6.2 billion as of June 30, 2012)

supports its strong financial flexibility and underpins the rating. CCT's

limited geographic diversity, significant exposure to the cyclical office

space sector in Singapore, and "intermediate" financial risk profile--with a

target gearing (defined as the ratio of loans to total investment properties)

of 30%-45%--temper these strengths.

We expect the CCT portfolio manager's good leasing record to continue when

CapitaGreen, a Grade A office building, is complete in 2014. In our view,

CCT's dominant market position in Singapore's Grade A office space would

strengthen because CapitaGreen will add a net lettable area of 700,000 square

feet to CCT's existing portfolio of three million square feet in lettable

space. As of June 30, 2012, the lease expiry profile of CCT's portfolio and

rent reviews are well staggered between 2012 and 2016. The REIT's overall

occupancy level of 96.2% is higher than the industry average of 91.6%. This

reflects the manager's good tenant-retention strategy and strong leasing

record.

In our base-case scenario, we expect CCT's gearing to increase to about

32%-35% over the next 12-24 months, after the completion of CapitaGreen. The

gearing is 30.1% as of June 30, 2012. We expect CCT's portfolio occupancy and

lease rates to decline, given global economic uncertainties. About 40% of

CCT's tenants are in the financial services, information technology and

telecommunications, and energy sectors. We project that the company's ratio of

funds from operations (FFO) to debt will weaken to about 9%-10% and EBITDA

interest cover will be about 3.8x-4x in the next 12-24 months. These ratios

are still within our threshold for CCT to have an "intermediate" financial

risk profile, as our criteria define the term. For the 12 months ended June

30, 2012, CCT's ratio of FFO to debt was 11% and EBITDA interest cover was

4.6x.

CCT's discretionary cash flow is minimal, given its low earnings retention.

This is typical of unit trust structures. Nevertheless, we expect the REIT's

strong financial flexibility to allow it to have access to debt and equity

markets. Such access will reduce the impact of the company's minimal

discretionary cash flow position and the inherent volatility in office lease

rates in Singapore.

Liquidity

CCT's liquidity is "adequate," as defined in our criteria. As of June 30,

2012, the REIT has a cash balance of S$132.1 million. We estimate that CCT's

liquidity sources will exceed liquidity uses by about 1.2x over the next 12

months. Our liquidity assessment is based on the following assumptions:

-- CCT will have FFO of S$200 million-S$230 million in 2012.

-- The trust has S$1.7 billion in untapped balance under its S$2 billion

medium-term notes program.

-- It will distribute S$200 million-S$210 million to unitholders.

On Aug. 14, 2012, CCT announced plans to refinance S$147 million of bonds that

are due in 2013 by issuing S$175 million of convertible bonds due in 2017.

Upon completion of this transaction in September 2012, CCT will not have any

major debt maturing in the next 24 months other than the S$50 million

medium-term notes due in June 2013.

We also believe that CCT's unencumbered assets of S$4.7 billion provide the

REIT with strong financial flexibility in the unlikely event of a liquidity

crunch. We expect CCT to adhere to its articulated financial policies when

using cash and taking on additional debt to finance the rest of its commitment

in CapitaGreen.

Outlook

The stable outlook reflects our view that CCT's property portfolio is of good

quality, its operating strategies are sound, and it has strong financial

flexibility. We could lower the rating if a fall in occupancy and negative

rental reversions cause CCT's cash flow metrics to weaken on a sustained

basis, such that its adjusted EBITDA interest cover falls below 2.5x and

FFO-to-debt ratio deteriorates to less than 9%.

We could raise the rating if CCT expands its asset base in high-quality

properties and continues its conservative financial policies, such that the

FFO-to-debt ratio improves to about 15% on a sustained basis.

SpellTower (for iPhone and iPad)

By Sascha Segan

SpellTower ($1.99), a wonderful iPhone and iPad game, has been featured in our "75 Best iPad Games" and "20 Awesome Full-Screen iPhone 5 Apps" articles. But while writing that latter story, I realized that I had never formally reviewed this wonderful brain parasite of a word game.?

Let's remedy that.

SpellTowerI'll slap 4.5 stars and an Editor's Choice on this addictive little time-waster. SpellTower combines attributes of Boggle and Tetris, but it's the fit and finish, the elegant color scheme and fonts (as shown at right), that really make it stand out from the masses.

SpellTower has a few different modes. In one, you try to draw words formed from letters on a grid. In the others, you draw your words, but the grid builds from the bottom and increases by a line every turn; if it fills up the screen, the game is over. "Rush mode" adds lines every few seconds rather than each turn. Some letters will clear a whole row, and some can't be used unless you're making longer words. As the game goes on, it demands more five- and six-letter words.

The iPhone and iPad versions have different sized grids; the iPad has a larger grid with more rows, making the game longer. The iPhone 5 uses the iPad's grid, so you get to take advantage of all that extra-long-screen goodness.

Multiplayer mode is strictly local, played between phones or iPads connected via Bluetooth. That's fine with me, but online connectivity would be the next logical step here.

Since I'm now playing this game during every commute, why not give it five stars? SpellTower has some minor issues with touch targets on the full-screen iPhone 5 grid. You may have to tap some letters twice. That's all.

If you like spelling, buy SpellTower.

Romney to speak with Israeli PM Netanyahu

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Mitt Romney is set to speak by telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (neh-ten-YAH'-hoo) on Friday.

The Republican presidential nominee's campaign confirms the scheduled conversation. It would come the same day that President Barack Obama also is expected to speak with Netanyahu phone.

The economy has dominated the presidential contest so far, but both candidates have focused more on foreign policy in recent weeks.

Romney has been critical of Obama's relationship with Israel's leadership.

Netanyahu told the United Nations on Thursday that tougher action is needed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The prime minister argues that an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities may be the only answer.

Obama and Romney support the use of military force if necessary to prevent Iran from possessing a nuclear weapon.

In the Kara Sea, where Exxon Mobil and Rosneft are planning to drill a region which is estimated to hold enough oil to supply the world for five years, environmentalists have a new reason to fear for the environment; nuclear radiation.?(RELATED:?Oil is Not Looking So Hot)

The Kara Sea is so remote that the Soviet Union used it as a dumping ground for radioactive material for more than 25 years. The two oil companies have avoided calls for the nuclear waste, estimated to consist of over 17,000 barrels of radioactive waste, worn-out reactors, and even an old nuclear submarine, to be cleared up before any exploration takes place.
Scientists from the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA) will soon present the results from their first survey in the area for 18 years, to determine whether or not the radiation is stable or increasing.
Rosneft released a statement to try and reassure the public that??all ecological and nature protection norms are being followed at the same time,? using ?the the best world practices available.?

The most dangerous item down on the sea floor in that area is the K-27 nuclear submarine, which was dumped their by the Soviet navy in 1981. The NRPA said that any significant corrosion could damage the ships reactor and cause an environmental disaster. (RELATED:?Big Oil Funding U.S. Politics)
Per Strand, a director at the NRPA, warned that??there might be a hypothetical possibility that the spent nuclear fuel in the reactor in extreme situations can cause an uncontrolled chain reaction, which can lead to heat and radioactivity releases.?
Igor Kudrik, an ecologist from Norwegian campaign group Bellona, suggests that??oil companies should make sure that the area is swiped clean of nuclear waste before they start any oil exploration activity.?

Tufts tests new technology that could aid in breast cancer diagnosis & treatment

MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, Mass. New optical imaging technology developed at Tufts University School of Engineering could give doctors new ways to both identify breast cancer and monitor individual patients' response to initial treatment of the disease. A five-year clinical study of the procedure, funded by a $3.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, is now underway at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

The non-invasive technology uses near infrared (NIR) light to scan breast tissue, and then applies an algorithm to interpret that information. Differences in light absorption allow identification of water, fats, and oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor tissue, the primary structures in breast tissue.

"The consensus is that x-ray mammography is very good at detecting lesions but it's not as good at determining which suspicious lesions are really cancer," says Professor of Biomedical Engineering Sergio Fantini, Ph.D., who is leading the research effort. The Tufts NIR technique could complement standard mammography, particularly for women younger than 40 who may have dense breast tissue that tends to obscure detail in x-rays.

Because it does not use ionizing radiation, the NIR technique can be applied multiple times over a short period without risk of radiation exposure, Fantini notes. Another advantage of the technology is that, unlike other breast imaging methods, it can obtain functional real-time images of metabolic changes, such as levels of hemoglobin concentration and oxygenation.

"It's been reported that patients who respond to breast cancer chemotherapy show a decrease in hemoglobin and water concentration and an increase in lipid concentration at the cancer site," explains Fantini. "This suggests that NIR imaging can be valuable not only in diagnosing breast cancer but in monitoring individual response to therapies without requiring repeated x-rays. For example, it could help determine if a patient is responding to neoadjuvant chemotherapy administered to shrink a tumor before surgery."

Optical mammography is also more comfortable than traditional mammograms. The patient's breasts are only lightly compressed between two horizontal glass panels and then illuminated by NIR light. A specialized software program displays real-time images of the breast as the optical system scans back and forth. A light detector within the system displays the intensity of the NIR beam as it is transmitted through the breast.

By using an algorithm based on the optical information, the technology generates breast images using the intensity of the transmitted light. The images are displayed automatically and can be read soon after the procedure, as is the case with x-ray mammograms. The technology can be packaged into compact, portable and handheld devices.

Clinical Testing

In collaboration with Roger Graham, M.D., director of Tufts Medical Center's Breast Health Center, and Marc Homer, M.D., chief of mammography at Tufts Medical Center, Fantini and his team conducted "proof of concept" tests to see if their procedure could corroborate information gathered with x-rays on two patients who each had suspicious lesions in one of their breasts.

The optical imaging was successful in enabling the team to identify cancerous tissue. "The test results were compatible with what we found in the x-ray mammography," Graham explains. "It was also painless for the patients and eliminated radiation exposure."

The team also includes Eric Miller, Ph.D., professor and chair of electrical and computer engineering and Misha Kilmer, Ph.D., professor of mathematics within the School of Arts and Sciences.

The NIH-funded study will investigate healthy women, women with breast cancer and women with benign breast lesions in an effort to examine the effectiveness of optical mammography in detecting breast cancer and distinguishing between malignant and benign tumors. The study will also look at breast cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy in order to characterize the power of optical mammography to determine patient response at the beginning of therapeutic treatment.

Find Your Niche With Internet Marketing | Valentino Crawford

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

You can profit greatly from a successful affiliate promotion venture, if you focus your energy, develop a plan that works and stick with it. Learn everything you can to ensure the highest profit margin. We have provided you with some tips to help you be successful at internet marketing.

Affiliate Companies

Be sure to inquire about payment options different affiliate companies use. There are affiliate companies that only offer payment once you have reached a particular dollar amount, while others will direct pay you through a checking account or other online payment services.

TIP! If you have made $1000 with affiliate marketing this month, go for $1500 next month. Never settle for what you have.

Don?t add a lot of banners on your site. Banners are unattractive from a design standpoint and may actually make you lose business. Make sure that you have a lot of other things on your site that go with the banners you have in place.

Some affiliate companies are better than others. Some can be hard or aggravating to navigate. Even if your site is not as efficiently designed as you would like, it is still possible to make money. Not only is this helpful, but it also builds trust and encourages purchases.

Use a variety of different methods to spread the word about your product. A part of your customer base will prefer searching the web for deals. Others might respond well to fliers and brochures. Then there are those people that will respond more if a coupon is involved. You will acquire more customers if you take a broad approach to marketing.

TIP! Sign up for online communities dedicated to affiliate marketing to trade tips and discuss strategies. There are a multitude of online forums and help groups available for you to join.

Create an e-book that is very short in length, and place it on various document sharing sites. This will show off your knowledge, attract visitors, and interest potential buyers in your website. In the document, include many links to your site.

One helpful way to generate sales is to provide user reviews and screenshots to promote your product. By providing more information to a possible consumer, you have a higher chance of them making the investment in your products and sending additional business to you.

Marketing Methods

TIP! To succeed with affiliate marketing, you must continue to adjust your strategies as new innovations are made. Make sure you always know what your affiliates have to offer your customers.

In order to be successful with online marketing, you need to know the most efficient marketing methods. It is easy to jump on a free option the first time you look at marketing methods. Although free methods often have merit, the focus should be on methods that allow the affiliate to achieve his or her goal.

Eventually, you will be able to gauge which affiliate advertising programs have been effective for certain demographic groups. Some demographics may convert well when shown high-tech media advertisements, whereas unobtrusive text ads could work better for other demographics. Consider the needs of your target audience as you begin creating advertisements.

Move away from pop-up ads to pop-under ads. Most browsers today block the pop-up ads before users even see them. If you do use pop-up advertising on your site, you should use advertisements that have a background loading option, as they generate a more positive response than traditional pop-ups.

TIP! People need to be aware that California affiliate marketing suspensions have been undone, and those clients can re-install any links onto their websites that they lost because of the suspension. There was a law that made California get rid of California affiliates but it has since been changed.

If you take the time to plan your next move and keep these tips in mind, you are going to see the positive outcome that you were hoping for when you decided to get involved. So make a action plan ? including these tips ? and get to work

P.S.-If you love to promote online affiliate programs and would love to make an extra $1000/day blogging about your favorite affiliate product, find out how my 2 friends are helping thousands of people make money about their passions! Discover why this game-changer is the most bad-ass affiliate marketer website in the industry!
