So the show that brought us the ?lesbian meatball? episode once again surprised gay lady viewers this week, but this time it was far more pleasant than two horribly unattractive straight girls drunkenly making out. On Thursday night?s episode of ?Jersey Shore,? we watched Vinny fail at trying to persuade an out and proud lesbian to go home with him?
But unfortunately said lesbian (whose name I am too lazy to search for) didn?t take the opportunity to scold the d-bag for his horrible treatment of women ? choosing to egg him on toward his backup ?DTF?er instead. Proof that lesbianism and feminism are definitely not always linked together ? especially down at the NJ shore.
Moving on quickly (because that first bit makes me feel dirty) to the biggest lesbian related news of the past week, Proposition 8 was ruled unconstitutional by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday, upholding the August 2010 decision of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco. As reported by the National Center for Lesbian Rights: ?The court ruled that Proposition 8 violates the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution because it ?serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.? The supporters of Prop 8 have 15 days to ask the Ninth Circuit panel to reconsider its decision or to ask for reconsideration by a larger panel of judges on that court. Alternatively, they have 90 days to request that the Supreme Court of the United States review the case.? In? other words, we?re closer, but same-sex unions won?t resume in CA until the appeals process is completed ? and you know the haters aren?t finished yet.
In other marriage equality news from across the nation, The Maryland House held a hearing on Friday on the historic marriage equality legislation recently introduced by Governor Martin O?Malley. Dozens of equality supporters testified over the course of the day, including Gov. O?Malley and two African American ministers who stated that they support his legislation despite traditions at their churches that limit marriage to a man and a woman.
Back in New Jersey, the state Senate and Assembly are scheduled to vote on a marriage equality bill this week so supporters from all over the state got together to make sure lawmakers know there is overwhelming support for marriage equality in their state. According to the Human Rights Campaign, ?more than 3,000 e-mail messages were sent to legislators in one day through Garden State Equality?s website, and students at William Paterson University shared their personal stories in handwritten letters.?? Volunteers also gathered in Cherry Hill, Montclair and Highland Park to make calls and help spread the word about the upcoming marriage vote. For more about the marriage campaign in New Jersey or to get involved, visit Garden State Equality?s website.
And finally, in Washington, state lawmakers voted to approve gay marriage Wednesday, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh in the nation to allow same-sex couples to wed. Now the bill goes to Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire, who is expected to sign it into law this week.
Oh, and let?s not forget this super cool speech by Washington state Representative Maureen Walsh, a Republican widower from Walla Walla who spoke about the wonderful connection that she shared with her husband and how she believes no one should be denied the right to experience that same bond she was able to have through marriage:
Also speaking out on behalf of equal rights for gays and lesbians ? Howard Stern. As reported by Towerload, the shock jock ?launched into a lengthy rant last week against Michele Bachman, Rick Santorum, and anti-gay Republicans over the Ellen DeGeneres ?One Million Moms? controversy. He also spoke out against anti-gay bullying and praised Newark mayor Cory Booker?s speech in support of marriage equality.? So basically it was a huge week for marriage quality progress and not much else really happened but, a few items of note: DC Comics announced this past week that ?Smallville? will continue on with an 11th season set to premiere online April 13 ? which is great news for all you comic loving ladies out there ? but even cooler is the intel reported by Lesley Goldberg via The Hollywood Reporter that lesbian artist Cat Staggs will be involved in the project; #TeamEquality put together an Equality PSA hosted by Miss CA contestant Mollie Thomas, ?Everyone Deserves Love? ? watch it HERE; and a major RIP goes out to Whitney Houston? The Advocate?s Clay Cane posted a moving editorial on Sunday about what the ?Mother of Pop?s? music meant to the gay community over the years and how she will be ?remembered for her timeless talent and as an ally to her multitude of LGBT fans.?
