Dog Sledding Holidays: What To Expect

If youve ever dreamed of exploring the Arctic, dog sledding holidays provide a fantastic way to do so. There are few experiences as exhilarating as being drawn across the snow on a sled pulled by a team of huskies, and few landscapes as pristine and enchanting as the ones youll traverse while doing so. To help you get in the right frame of mind for such a trip, read on.

What Youll See

The details of your surroundings will, of course, depend on where you choose to go for your dog sledding holidays, but all the potential destinations share an incredible natural beauty. There are the soaring mountains and gleaming lakes of the Yukon, where bears, moose and caribou roam, and pike and trout dart through the waters while hawks, bald eagles and golden eagles soar overhead. North America also offers a plethora of other great locations, from stunning forest scenery in Prince Albert National Park to the sweeping beauty of Algonquin Park. In Europe, the icy wonders and ancient traditions of Lapland await, as well as the icebergs and remote settlements of Greenland.

What Youll Learn

Learning new things is one of the joys of travel, and this is especially true in this case. While the sights that surround you as you make your way across the snow on dog sledding holidays are enough of a magical new experience in themselves, there is also wonder and new knowledge to be gained from the activity itself. Youll learn more about the abilities, personalities and needs of the dogs, which are in many cases Siberian Huskies, although other breeds such as the Alaskan Malamute and the Mahikan are used in some places; each breed will have its own unique but equally interesting characteristics. You might also learn about the history of dog sledding, which predates our era by thousands of years, and about the principles of mushing which comes from the French order traditionally given to the dogs to start moving: Marche!

How to Prepare

While those who have previously embarked on dog sledding holidays will likely agree that they are a fantastic experience from start to finish, it can not be denied that some preparation is necessary to meet the conditions that you will be experiencing. The destinations for such holidays are some of the worlds coldest, so knowing how to protect yourself from the elements is important. When packing, be sure to include plenty of warm clothes, as well as a weatherproof outer layer and good boots. Synthetic fabrics are better than cotton, which retains moisture and can make the wearer cold. Specialist equipment and advice will usually be provided by your holiday operator, but dont forget the smaller essentials such as sunglasses and sunscreen, as the snow can reflect a considerable amount of sunlight.

Philippa Westwood is Marketing Manager at Windows on the Wild, a specialist of wildlife watching tours and dog sledding holidays. Destinations include Canada, Lapland and Sweden where dog sledding holidays can take you on adventurous experiences across the world.

I would go based off us the way he acts around you.?To be honest, I usually pursue Asian guys who have a diverse group of friends. I find that when they have a more diverse group of friends, they seem to be more comfortable around black women and open to AMBW. Things are usually easier with them.?

Thats just me, and I don?t want to discourage you. There are Asian guys out there who only have Asian friends, but are still open to other cultures. Just because you only have a certain group of people around you doesn?t necessarily mean you?re closed minded. We have had submissions from girls living in Asia who have found their husbands and boyfriends there. They?re surrounded by Asians, but was still open to dating a black girl.?

I?d rather you take the plunge and pursue him, then be too scared to try and be left wondering ?what if?. Good luck, and keep us updated.?

Parents talking about their own drug use to children could be detrimental

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Parents know that one day they will have to talk to their children about drug use. The hardest part is to decide whether or not talking about ones own drug use will be useful in communicating an antidrug message. Recent research, published in the journal Human Communication Research, found that children whose parents did not disclose drug use, but delivered a strong antidrug message, were more likely to exhibit antidrug attitudes.

Jennifer A. Kam, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Ashley V. Middleton, MSO Health Information Management, published in Human Communication Research their findings from surveys of 253 Latino and 308 European American students from the sixth through eighth grades. The students reported on the conversations that they have had with their parents about alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana. Kam and Middleton were interested in determining how certain types of messages were related to the students' substance-use perceptions, and in turn, behaviors.

Past research found that teens reported that they would be less likely to use drugs if their parents told them about their own past drug use. In Kam and Middleton's study, however, Latino and European American children who reported that their parents talked about the negative consequences, or regret, over their own past substance use were actually less likely to report anti-substance-use perceptions. This finding means that when parents share their past stories of substance use, even when there is a learning lesson, such messages may have unintended consequences for early adolescent children.

Kam and Middleton's study identifies specific messages that parents can relay to their children about alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana that may encourage anti-substance-use perceptions, and in turn, discourage actual substance use. For example, parents may talk to their kids about the negative consequences of using substances, how to avoid substances, that they disapprove of substance use, the family rules against substance use, and stories about others who have gotten in trouble from using substances.

"Parents may want to reconsider whether they should talk to their kids about times when they used substances in the past and not volunteer such information, Kam said. "Of course, it is important to remember this study is one of the first to examine the associations between parents' references to their own past substance use and their adolescent children's subsequent perceptions and behaviors."

(AP) ? The Pentagon on Friday grounded its fleet of F-35 fighter jets after discovering a cracked engine blade in one plane.

The problem was discovered during what the Pentagon called a routine inspection at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., of an F-35A, the Air Force version of the sleek new plane. The Navy and the Marine Corps are buying other versions of the F-35, which is intended to replace older fighters like the Air Force F-16 and the Navy F/A-18.

All versions ? a total of 51 planes ? were grounded Friday pending a more in-depth evaluation of the problem discovered at Edwards. None of the planes have been fielded for combat operations; all are undergoing testing.

In a brief written statement, the Pentagon said it is too early to know the full impact of the newly discovered problem.

The F-35 is the Pentagon's most expensive weapons program at a total estimated cost of nearly $400 billion. The Pentagon envisions buying more than 2,400 F-35s, but some members of Congress are balking at the price tag.

Friday's suspension of flight operations will remain in effect until an investigation of the problem's root cause is determined.

The Pentagon said the engine in which the problem was discovered is being shipped to a Pratt & Whitney facility in Connecticut for more thorough evaluation.

Reducing Ontario's debt must be tackled, says Hudak

February 21, 2013

KELLY LAPOINTE

Tim Hudak, Ontario Progressive Conservative leader, says Ontario?s new premier, Kathleen Wynne, must focus on provincial debt reduction and job creation.

Reducing Ontario?s debt must be tackled, says Hudak

Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak says the throne speech by new Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne must confront the province?s debt and job crisis in order to gain PC support.

?I?ll support a serious, comprehensive plan to address what is the biggest debt and jobs crisis in our lifetime,? he said, speaking at the recent Ontario Road Builders? Association (ORBA) 86th annual convention.

He says he is worried about what he has heard so far.

?If the new premier thinks the path forward is continued over spending, anti-job ideas like the College of Trades, more red tape, well, that?s going to take us further down the wrong track.?

As part of his vision for Ontario, Hudak said he would shrink the size of cabinet to 16. One PC white paper issued last year proposed putting the Ministry of Infrastructure with the Ministry of Finance. At the ORBA convention, Hudak said he is open to different cabinet designs.

?I?ll make sure that whatever minister is in charge of infrastructure realizes that we need to build infrastructure that?s going to create the next jobsI want to see us investing in highways again so goods get to market,? he said.

He wants a cabinet focused on balancing the books and creating jobs again.

?I?m open to the path, but I will bring us down to 16.?

Hudak said the government needs to lower taxes so businesses can invest and create jobs in Ontario.

?With tax relief comes economic growth, more people working again and more revenue coming into our treasury. It means more businesses investing in equipment and innovation,? he told the audience.

?Cutting taxes on businesses that create jobs is a core part of our comprehensive plan.?

Gridlock in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) has become an economic burden and Hudak said there are currently too many hands at the wheel to efficiently solve the problem.

?Nothing gets done, but one thing gets done, there?s a brand new transit plan that gets done every six months and goes on a shelf somewhere when the next one comes.?

He said it?s important to balance subways, light rail transit, bus routes and highways.

He also said public-private partnerships will be one option moving forward.

?When the TTC does their own tunnel, they do it for about three, four times the cost of what they do in the private sector. You get a lot more miles done if you involve the private sector that way.?

He addressed new revenue tools and alluded to the recently released ?Financing Roads and Public Transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area? report from the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario which calls for road pricing and highway tolls, among some of the ways to generate new funds for transportation infrastructure.

He said he is fine with tolling new highways or creating tolled express lanes.

?But this notion of throwing down tolls on highways that we?ve already paid for simply punishes drivers and who knows where that money is going. People already paid a lot in taxes.?

The Liberals? throne speech was delivered on Feb. 19, as the Ontario Legislature reconvenes after months of prorogation.

College Hosts Graphic Sex Tutorial for Students Inside a Church

The best word to describe this is ?desecration.?

Allegheny College?s Ford Memorial Chapel was transformed into a boudoir of sorts Wednesday night, as professional sex educators advised students in attendance how best to touch themselves and their partners to reach orgasm in what was billed as an educational seminar.

The chapel, built and dedicated in 1902, is where Catholic mass and non-denominational services are conducted every week at the private liberal arts college in northwestern Pennsylvania. But all that took a back pew to Wednesday?s festivities, dubbed ?I Heart the Female Orgasm? and hosted by a variety of student groups on campus.

The two sex educators, Marshall Miller and Kate Weinberg, talked students through a variety of masturbation techniques during the event.

The story is pretty lurid, but probably only skims the surface of what happened. The college chaplain was cool with hosting the event in the church.

Chaplain Jane Ellen Nickel, who conducts non-denominational Christian services each Sunday and manages the office of Spiritual and Religious Life, said in an email to The College Fix that she saw nothing wrong with the event, and hoped students would feel comfortable attending a religious service there later.

?I don?t have a problem with it being held in the chapel. The program advocates responsible, respectful decision-making regarding sexual behavior, and includes the option waiting for marriage, a message that resonates with many students of faith. While the name may have some shock value, the event itself is consistent with our policy of opening the building to campus groups. We would love it if students at such an event experience the chapel as a welcoming space, and then feel encouraged to attend a religious service or program.?

Just a guess, but students who are genuinely curious about the taboo subject of faith aren?t likely to seek it or find it with that chaplain.

Tuition at Allegheny college runs about $18,000 per semester.

A Mini mindset: how an automaker's Connected platform could spark a seismic shift in infotainment expectations

A Mini mindset how an automaker's Connected platform could spark a seismic shift in infotainment expectations

Mini sold some 66,000 vehicles in the United States last year, and despite being on American soil (in its current incarnation, anyway) for just 13 years, this market has quickly become its biggest. Those drawn to the brand are likely intrigued by, if not outright enamored of, its quirkiness. Mini likes to say that the company is "Not Normal," and it only takes a glance inside its cartoonish Countryman to see what that means.

During a recent kickoff event to celebrate the impending launch of its Paceman model, we sought to get beneath the sheet metal and gear ratios, instead looking at the kinds of decisions that impact the marriage of automobiles and technology. Turns out, Johnly Velasquez and Chris Potgieter -- two gentlemen in charge of determining what technology ends up in Mini products -- were more than happy to discuss those nuances. In particular, we discussed how those details relate to the future of its Connected platform, the role that infotainment plays in its entire range of motorcars and the opportunities that lie ahead for Mini to embrace alternative power.

Could Mini's prioritization of technology as a pillar of automotive manufacturing influence the entire industry? That's exactly what we'll explore just beyond the break.

(AP) ? (AP) ? There's a 15-year-old Florida girl who didn't really know much about Charlie Sheen before this week ? but does now.

The actor wired $10,000 to Teagan Marti and her family on Thursday for a therapy dog to help in her rehabilitation from injuries sustained when she plummeted 100 feet from a Wisconsin amusement park ride in 2010.

"I think he's a very kind person for helping me and my family and very generous," Teagan Marti said by phone Thursday from her home in Parkland, Fla.

Teagan Marti suffered brain, spine, pelvis and internal injuries in July 2010 when nets and air bags that were supposed to catch riders on a free-fall ride were not raised. She had convinced her family to make the trip from Florida to Extreme World in Wisconsin Dells after seeing the amusement park's Terminal Velocity ride on the Travel Channel.

She was hospitalized in Wisconsin and Florida for three months. She initially had no use of her arms or legs but through physical therapy is able to walk again with a walker.

Teagan Marti's mother, Julie Marti, said they are financially in trouble from the medical bills and her recent divorce. Their house is being foreclosed upon and insurance isn't covering physical therapy anymore, she said. She had no idea how they would pay for the English Golden Retriever puppy.

"I'm in such disbelief," Julie Marti said. "I was crying. ... What a guy. What a guy."

The dog is being trained in Fond du Lac to turn on lights, pick up objects and be the teen's constant companion.

Lucia Wilgus, of Eau Claire, became friends with the Martis after hearing of the accident and has spearheaded fundraising and helped find the dog and arrange training.

She sent a letter this week to Sheen through Sheen's godfather, who is a Wilgus family friend and Benedictine brother in the Benet Lake, Wis. She estimated the training and related costs would be around $6,000.

Sheen said he decided to give more for extra costs. The request had a "personal vibe" since it came through his godfather, and "if there's a need for more I told them to call me," he said.

"I like to pay it forward," Sheen said Thursday in a phone interview from Los Angeles. "People come into your orbit for a reason. You don't always know what that is ahead of time, but if I ignore these requests then I don't have any opportunity to see where these things lead us, or lead me."

He said he doesn't like to publicize most of his donations, but wanted to talk about this one to inspire others to donate.

Teagan Marti gets the dog on her birthday in September but hasn't made up her mind on a name.

"I think they should name the dog Charlie," Sheen joked.

A new cattle drug called Zilmax is being widely used in the industrial feedlots where most of America?s beef comes from, but not because it produces a better sirloin. In fact, it has been shown to make steak less flavorful and juicy than beef from untreated cattle. Many feedlot owners, big meatpackers, and at least one prominent industry group resisted the drug, worrying that the beef industry would turn off consumers if it started churning out lower-quality steaks.

So what accounts for the sudden popularity of Zilmax? Zilmax is a highly effective growth drug, and it makes cattle swell up with muscle in the final weeks of their lives. And despite concerns within the industry, the economics of modern beef production have made the rise of Zilmax all but inevitable.

The beef industry has been shrinking for decades, a problem that can be traced to cheap chicken. Poultry companies like Tyson Foods figured out in the 1930s and ?40s how to raise chickens in a factory-like system. Using a business model called vertical integration, poultry companies like Tyson began to control every aspect of animal production, from the hatchery to the farm and the slaughterhouse. After the dawn of vertical integration, chickens were raised in barn-like warehouses on the farm, killed and butchered along assembly lines nearby, and, later, shipped out to big customers like McDonald?s and Wal-Mart?with every step of the process dictated by the same company. In the 1990s, the same model was widely applied to pork production, cutting out the middlemen and leading to a drop in pork prices (after adjusting for inflation).

As chicken got cheaper, it took top billing on fast-food menus. Beef got pushed aside. Some companies have tried to vertically integrate cattle production, but it has never panned out economically, thanks to the stubborn biology of cows. Chicken and pigs have offspring in big numbers, which lends itself to industrial-sized barns. (Hens lay a steady supply of eggs that yield full-grown chickens in about two months; sows bear big litters of piglets that reach maturity in about six months.) But a cow can only have one calf at a time, and the gestation period lasts nine months. After that, a calf suckles from its mother for about four months. It would be exorbitantly expensive to confine that life cycle in a warehouse, since the cow and calf would have to be sheltered and fed for over a year, just to get one full-grown heifer out of the deal. As a result, the vast majority of calves are still born and reared on wide-open ranchland, where herds of them eat free grass and stick by their mother?s side.

But cattle producers still imitate the heavily industrialized chicken industry to compete. Zilmax is part of a new regime for raising cattle that emphasizes higher production and cost-cutting wherever possible. This regime is what created the modern-day feedlot, where thousands of cattle, after being raised on open ranchland, are corralled on muddy hillsides to spend the last few months of their life eating corn. It is also what necessitates the battery of pharmaceuticals and feed additives that cattle must consume to stay healthy and gain weight?as Michael Pollan and others have noted, cattle didn?t evolve to digest corn, so they easily become sick on feedlots without careful monitoring.

Even with these advancements, the cattle business is still divided in half: On one side are independent ranches and feedlots that raise cattle; on the other side are big meatpackers that buy cattle from feedlots, slaughter them, and sell the beef. The relationship between cattlemen and meatpackers veers between amiable and adversarial. Neither can succeed without the other, but both are desperate to increase profits.

Enter Zilmax. Originally developed to treat asthma in humans, it was later found to be a ?repartitioning agent? in cattle, changing the animals? metabolism so they produce more muscle instead of fat. While this can boost the amount of meat per carcass, it can remove the very qualities that people like about beef, like the fatty marbling that adds juiciness and flavor. In 2006, Intervet Inc., the company that originally made Zilmax, won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to use it in the food supply, even after noting in its application to the FDA that ?overall tenderness, juiciness, flavor intensity and beef flavor were all statistically different [in Zilmax-treated beef] compared to controls.? (Intervet?s application also said consumers probably wouldn?t notice the lesser quality.) The drug wasdrug d launched commercially in the United States in 2007 and is now sold by Merck Animal Health.

At first, meatpackers greeted Zilmax with skepticism. Early research showing the harmful effects on beef quality scared off many feedlot owners who would have purchased it. By the late summer of 2011 only two of the major meatpackers, Tyson Foods Inc. and JBS SA, accepted cattle treated with Zilmax, according to feedlot managers and the companies. Cargill, which was concerned about quality, didn?t accept Zilmax-treated cattle until 2012. National Beef Packing Co. refused to comment on its Zilmax practices for this article, but according to feedlot managers, that company also began accepting Zilmax-treated animals last year. Those four major meatpackers control roughly 85 percent of the market, so when they decide to accept a new practice, as they now have with Zilmax, its implementation is swift across the entire beef supply.

As Zilmax gains popularity, it is creating a kind of positive feedback loop. As more feedlots use it and more meatpackers accept it, more of their competitors feel pressured to do the same just to keep up, even if they have concerns about Zilmax?s effects.

Sponsored links, if any, appear in green.

The Google Search Android app has been updated to include a new Google Now widget that shows small versions of important cards on the home screen, and adds new options for Google Now search cards.

A Google Now widget has been added to the home screen. The widget can take up an entire screen and showcase current weather, upcoming appointments, stocks, news, and more. It can be resized to show just the basic information about current weather and the forecast for the following day.

Android 4.1 or later devices can now download the updated Google Search application, which includes support for Movie passes from Fandango. Google Now already provided search options and movie times on films, but users can now set it to provide notifications when near a theatre or on "Movie Days" and get tickets from Fandango. Movies have also been updated to include ratings from film critic aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Other features include Zillow real estate listings, the ability to add collegiate sports, and a button that can listen to identify music being played in the background. It's easy to access the music button by tapping the blue music note when launching a Voice search, but it works only in the U.S.

A decade after 'ER,' Edwards back on TV

NEW YORK (AP) ? A decade after Dr. Mark Greene hung up his white lab coat for good on "ER," Anthony Edwards is back as the star of a new television series.

He plays Hank Galliston, a magazine publisher wrapped up in an historical mystery after his wife is kidnapped on ABC's "Zero Hour," which premieres Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. EST. The action thriller requires an audience to concentrate as the story unfolds layer by layer.

The road back to series television took Edwards many miles to travel ? literally thousands upon thousands.

Edwards' character Greene was the heart of what was then television's most popular drama before the actor bowed out after eight years. Upon leaving, "I didn't really have a plan other than I knew I wasn't going to jump into a series again and I knew that I was really tired and burnt out," he said.

Professionally, maybe. Personally, Edwards had a clear strategy. The California native moved his wife and four children to New York. He was going to spend time raising his kids and give his artist wife time to establish her career, before they took off on a dream adventure.

While fellow actors George Clooney and Julianna Margulies left "ER" quickly to try other things, Edwards committed himself to a four-year contract. At the time, the commitment seemed huge ? four years seems a lot longer at age 36 than it does now, when he's 50 ? but the decision set him up financially for life.

He bought a plane and took the family (and two teachers) on a 310-day trip around the world, through Africa, India, Southeast Asia and just about every exotic place you could imagine.

"It sounds like 'Howdy Doody,'" Edwards said. "But I've never met the older man who wishes he had spent less time with his kids while they were young. You don't meet anybody who says, 'God, I wish I had worked harder and was gone more.'"

He had an opportunity that few people have.

"I've always been able to pay for what I needed and always done what I've wanted," he said. "It got crazy when it was, yeah, we can buy a plane and go around the world, but that wasn't the goal. That was no more excessive than when I was 20 and I could buy a $150 pair of boots because I wanted them. It feels extravagant in the same way."

He didn't leave the business. Edwards was always comfortable behind the scenes, and had been close to leaving acting for directing before getting the "ER" job. He has his own production company, Grand Central Entertainment, and was an executive producer of HBO's "Temple Grandin." He did some film acting, in "Zodiac" and the memorable flop "Motherhood."

Showtime's loss proved ABC's gain. Grand Central developed a series about a high-end public relations firm that Edwards had planned to act in and when Showtime passed, he found himself with free time. Edwards started looking at other scripts and found "Zero Hour" to be "a total page-turner."

Zack Estrin, one of the show's four executive producers, couldn't believe his luck.

"It's an honor when somebody who could have his choice of shows chooses yours," he said. "It's like, the prom queen chooses you to have a dance."

Having a well-known actor attach himself to your project has its obvious benefits, and Estrin hopes some viewers try out "Zero Hour" just to see what Edwards is doing. The danger is that television has its cases of actors being so defined by an overwhelmingly successful role that viewers have a hard time seeing them do something else. Edwards believes the characters he has chosen guard against that.

"My career has never been based on the fact that I was an action hero or a specific kind of comedian," Edwards said. "What's fun about it is it appears a little bit boring, but for me the subtleties of what is going on is what makes it fun."

In many ways, Mark Greene was designed to be a person that viewers can relate to. Same thing with Galliston. The show needs a character to steady the boat, Estrin said.

"That's what Anthony is," he said. "He's somebody who's solid and dependable, somebody the audience can trust. On a show where you don't know who you can trust and who you can believe, it's important to have somebody at the center you know you can."

Keep your eyes open for an inside joke. In one episode where Galliston is depicted escaping from pursuers he puts on a lab coat and walks through a medical facility. Mark Greene lives!

The young actor who once learned by example from Hal Holbrook and Sean Penn is now leading the same way himself, demonstrating to younger cast members the importance of showing up on time and knowing your lines. Edwards enjoys the comfort of being back on a television set.

"I understand how a day on a set is supposed to go and it makes perfect sense," he said. "It's my playground. A question from a 12-year-old? That's when it gets tough. Raising kids is hard."

The British Forces Post Office gets a fresh brand and a new mobile iPhone and iPad app with the help of London-based App Development Studio Locassa Ltd. ? (February 11, 2013)

London (PRWEB UK) 11 February 2013

When looking for a new service partner, the British Forces Post Office, BFPO, chose a more creative agency in Locassa Ltd to deliver a fresh new product for families of British servicemen and women. The app provides posting information, last post deadlines, postage calculators and postal restrictions to those with family members or partners stationed with the British Forces both in the UK and overseas, however it is the rebranding of such an established service which Locassa are most proud of.

Simon Lee, Locassa CEO explains, Normally when working with large, established institutions such as the BFPO, we have to adhere to strict branding and style guidelines and the start of this project was no exception. Despite having some amazing creative members in our team, we were told to follow the current branding as expected, however one of our guys tried out a fresh and clean new brand just as an example to show what could be done. The reception was unexpected as Simon explains, We showed the BFPO team and they loved it, we werent expecting them to adopt the new branding at all, but now they are rolling it out to their other products and services. We built them an app and defined their new brand in one go, were incredibly proud.

The new brand design features a clean backdrop with a deep purple accent, clear labelling, modern typography and a human aspect to the user interface and user experience. We look at the target demographic for the apps we work on and tailor the approach accordingly, Simon said, In this case, families and parents of those in the Forces. We decided a human-like approach was best so we pose the question What do you want to do today? By taking this approach the interface becomes clean, understandable and easy to use, yes we got our trademark gesture interaction in there in the form of the postage calculator, after all it wouldnt be a Locassa app without it. he concluded.

Locassa have since moved onto the next BFPO mobile app, due to launch soon, showing the forward thinking focus of the client something which Simon is increasingly seeing. He explains, More and more clients come to us because they want to move their products and services forward, and in the app world, were the studio who make that happen. Its an exciting time for mobile and were very excited to be such a large part of it.

The BFPO app is available on Apple iPhone and iPad now.

Company Information

Locassa was founded in 2009 by Simon Lee, and is now one of the top app development studios in the UK employing a team of highly focused individuals across development, creative and management. Locassa work differently to most iPhone developers and iPad development companies something which shows in their work. Locassa pride themselves on producing amazing work for their clients and ensuring that every app experience is a unique one.

Scientists confirm original tetrahedral model of molecular structure of water

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) have confirmed the original model of the molecular structure of water and have thus made it possible to resolve a long-standing scientific controversy about the structure of liquid water. The tetrahedral model was first postulated nearly 100 years ago and it assumes that every water molecule forms a so-called hydrogen bond with four adjacent molecules. This concept was almost toppled in 2004 when an international research group announced that it had experimentally established that water molecules form bonds only with two other molecules.

"The quality of the results was excellent but they merely represent a snapshot of the situation," explained Professor Dr. Thomas K?hne. He has demonstrated the fallacy of the 'double bonding' theory using computer simulations based on new types of combinations of two computational methods recently developed by his group.

Some very special and unique features of water, such as its liquid aggregate state and high boiling point, are attributable to the effect of the hydrogen bonds between the water molecules. The H bonds are formed due to the different charges carried by the oxygen and hydrogen atoms that make up water molecules and the resultant dipolar structure. The traditional, generally accepted view was that water had a tetrahedral structure at room temperature, so that on average each water molecule would be linked with four adjacent molecules via two donor and two acceptor bonds. "In our theoretical approach, the median result we observed over time was always for quadruple bonding," said K?hne. Thanks to the new simulations, he and his colleague Dr. Rhustam Khaliullin have now been able to confirm the old model and also supply an explanation for why double bonding was observed in 2004. According to K?hne, the result was not indicative of double bonding "but of instantaneous asymmetrical fluctuation" only.

There is thus significant asymmetry in the four H bonds of the tetrahedral model because of the different energy of the contacts. This asymmetry is the result of temporary disruptions to the hydrogen bond network, which take the form of extremely short term fluctuations occurring on a timescale of 100 to 200 femtoseconds. These fluctuations mean that one of the two donor or acceptor bonds is temporarily much stronger than the other. But these fluctuations precisely cancel each other out so that, on average over time, the tetrahedral structure is retained.

The results reported in 2004 using x-ray absorption spectroscopy were obtained using water molecules with high levels of momentary asymmetry, which is why essentially only two strong hydrogen bonds were observed in an otherwise tetrahedral structure. "Our findings have important implications as they help reconcile the symmetric and asymmetric views on the structure of water," write the scientists in an article published in Nature Communications. The results may also be relevant to research into molecular and biological systems in aqueous solutions and provide insight into protein folding, for example.

The work of Thomas K?hne's group was undertaken within an interdisciplinary joint project and was funded by the Research Unit Center for Computational Sciences at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

Belkin Tablet Stand With Storage

Back in elementary school, I remember when our class got the original iMac, in all its Bondi Blue glory. At the time I saw it as a machine to play games like Nanosaur and Bugdom, but in hindsight it helped foster my growing computer literacy?a skill that would prove invaluable. Flash forward to today's classrooms, where computers like iMacs have been replaced by tablets like the Apple iPad. Despite the many advantages of tablets, they're not the most comfortable devices to use. Belkin has developed the Tablet Stand with Storage ($39.99 direct) with education and ergonomics in mind. It not only provides comfortable positions for propping up and typing on tablets, but also gives students a small compartment for toting supplies from classroom to classroom.

Design and Features
The Tablet Stand with Storage is designed with gentle curves, sturdy plastic, and grippy rubber surfaces. It has a wide base and lip, suitable for larger tablets like the iPad, and a translucent storage compartment. The lip on the front allows you to prop tablets upright, which is useful for watching videos or browsing the Web, while the sloping top allows for a more reclined position, for typing or tasks that require a lot of touch input.

The stand is compatible with every iPad, Kindle Fire, Galaxy Tab, and basically any tablet that is less than an inch thick. I tested it with an iPad 2 and an iPad mini?both fit fine, though I found that the lip covered a bit of the screen on the mini when in landscape orientation. The top of the stand is covered in a slip-proof rubber, which holds tablets securely in place in the more reclined position. While it's no substitute for a physical keyboard, typing using the stand is more comfortable, as you don't have to crane your neck over a flat desk to see the tablet's screen.

Inline

The transparent storage compartment measures about 7.5 by 4.5 by 2 inches (HWD), making it a good space for pencils, scissors, calculators, cell phones, and whatever other small supplies students might need?it's not big enough for books or notebooks. There's an indentation on the front for popping open the storage space, but I found it required a bit of force to open. You also can't open the storage with a tablet propped up in the stand. It is, at least, secure when closed, meaning it will be good for students who need to carry the stand from classroom to classroom with supplies in tow. It's reminiscent of those classroom desks with storage compartments underneath, only smaller and more portable.

Belkin Tablet Stand

Belkin also makes a $24.99 Tablet Stand that shares a similar look and feel, but nixes the storage compartment in favor of a thin, light, and easily stackable design. Both models are available in two-tone blue, two-tone green, or gray finishes.

?

Conclusions
Both the Belkin Tablet Stand and Tablet Stand With Storage are simple but thoughtfully designed, and useful in classroom settings. The former is simple and easy to deploy or store with minimal setup and a stackable design, while the latter features a storage compartment that makes it easy for students to tote their supplies from class to class. Most importantly, both will help promote proper posture and improved angles for typing and other touch interaction. My biggest concern is the price?at $25 or $40 a pop, they could weigh heavily on already constrained school budgets. Then again, if you have enough funds to furnish a classroom with iPads, investing a little more for an improved experience is probably worth it.

Beckham weaves some English influences into fall

NEW YORK (AP) ? Of course Victoria Beckham had hot cups of tea at the ready at her New York Fashion Week show on Sunday. It was cold outside, and Beckham knows how to take care of her guests, just like she does her customers.

The cozy, refined, do-it-the-right-way vibe made it to the runway. She has figured out how to keep the signature chic that has made her label a fashion powerhouse instead of celebrity flavor of the week, while pushing the envelope just enough to keep it interesting.

The most unexpected looks at the show at the New York Public Library's grand entrance hall were the flashes of bright yellow, including a sleeveless trench; the techno shine she added to pleated skirts that the audience could only see as the models walked; and the long cape-style tuxedo coat. That coat looked like it belonged to a husband or boyfriend and would be draped over a woman's shoulders as she made her way home from a fancy wintertime event. "It's sharp, refined ... feels very sexy."

It's worth mentioning her that David Beckham sat in the front row, as he always does, and then held their young daughter, Harper, in his arms backstage as his wife did post-show interviews.

The designer said she is "spending more time in England, although I miss America, but you see England in the fabrics."

Beckham's opening look was a windowpane plaid coat, and she also incorporated more sweaters and knits into the collection. There was a nod to mod with some geometric, colorblocked shift dresses.

One of the important evolutions for fall is the softer shoulder, which she used to tweak one of her popular zip-back, slim-fit dress silhouettes.

For shoes, she put models in lower kitten heels, made in collaboration with Manolo Blahnik, which was a bit of a surprise for a woman known for skyscraper stilettos.

"I'm always designing what I want to wear," she said.

She also confirmed that she'll continue to show her clothes to retailers, editors and stylists in New York each season, even though her studio ? and now her family ? is back in London. And David Beckham recently announced that he was joining a Paris-based soccer club.

"I am excited about spending more time in Paris," Victoria Beckham added.
