Twitter censorship #outrage, now in cartoon form!

NMA/YouTube

By Helen A.S. Popkin

Twitter's recent announcement that it will censor specific tweets from some countries resulted in an anti-climatic "boycott" of the microblogging service on Saturday, and more importantly, a cartoon-ified interpretation by those clever kids at Taiwan's New Media Animation.

Indeed, the same outfit that most recently explained tough times for Nintendo via Mario wearing an "Angry Birds" hat, and memorably, Mark Zuckerberg's new hobby of killing what he eats, as well as Steve Jobs: Airport Ninja, now breaks down Twitter's country-by-country censorship plans in crude CGI metaphors we can all understand.

Twitter's value in fomenting revolution during the Arab Spring is shown as blue birds and protesters running down deposed Egyptian president Muhammad Hosni El Sayed Mubarak, who's sporting Pharaoh threads. Meanwhile, the Republic of China ? which holds jurisdiction over Taiwan ? gets the most screen time.

"Could Twitter foolishly be preparing to enter the most heavily censored Internet market in the world?" read the subtitles, as the cartoon?shows someone who sure looks a whole lot like Chinese artist and?political activist Ai Weiwei snapping a picture of his own?hand making the gesture known as "flipping the bird" to a surveillance camera in China as Twitter bluebirds soar across the sky. (Get it?! Birds!)

"Many Twitter users, however, are outraged and believe the company is selling out Internet freedom, possibly with an eye for entering the China market, where it is blocked, though it is used by Chinese dissidents to get information to the outside world," the svideo's description states for those who need it spelled out. ("If Twitter censors then I'll stop tweeting," Chinese activist artist Ai Weiwei tweeted after hearing the news.")

But?do you really need a literal interpretation of "the?most heavily censored Internet market," when gun-toting pandas?outfitted as People's Liberation Army soldiers shoot at Twitter-style bluebirds breaching the sky? We get the picture.?

Rubinstein, who revitalized Palm, leaves HP

The future is mobile, says the former Apple executive, who had seen his role reduced after Hewlett-Packard killed off his webOS for the handheld Palm. Rubinstein is taking a break.?

Jon Rubinstein, the former Apple executive who spearheaded engineering for the iPod, and then proceeded to revitalize Palm, has officially left Hewlett-Packard, the company confirmed today.

The news isn?t entirely unexpected. Rubinstein was reportedly a no-show at HP since former CEO Leo Apotheker?killed off the company?s WebOS devices. Even before that his role at HP was reduced with a change to a vague ?SVP of innovation? title.

An HP spokesperson?told All Things Digital, which first reported the news about Rubinstein?s departure, that ?Jon has fulfilled his commitment and we wish him well.? Rubinstein confirmed that he only agreed to stick around HP for 12 to 24 months after it acquired Palm, in?an interview with The Verge.

Speaking to the Verge?s Joshua Topolsky, Rubinstein deftly avoided chatting about where Palm went wrong or complaining about Apotheker?s treatment of webOS:

We built an amazing OS in webOS. It?s very advanced, it?s where things are going. But we ran out of runway, and we ended up at HP and HP wasn?t in good enough shape on its own to be able to support the effort. I had four CEOs! Mark acquired us, Les Jackson took over as the interim CEO, then Leo, and now Meg.

Now Rubinstein, seemingly going full circle, is taking a much-deserved break in Mexico, where the Palm folks initially tapped him to help save the company in 2007. He admitted that he?s still carrying a tiny webOS-powered Veer, and that he hopes to get back into the mobile world in some fashion.

?I think the future is mobile,? Rubinstein told the Verge. ?Obviously there?s going to be stuff that comes post mobile, there?ll be a next wave. It could very well be home integration, but mobile?s going to continue to be really important. But I have no idea what I?m going to do next. I haven?t spent a minute thinking about it.?

Researchers discover cancer in Egyptian mummy

? A professor from American University in Cairo said the discovery of prostate cancer in a 2,200-year-old mummy indicates the disease was caused by genetics, not environment.

AUC professor Salima Ikram, a member of the team that studied the mummy in Portugal for two years, said Sunday the mummy was a man who died in his forties.

She said this was the second oldest known case of prostate cancer.

?Living conditions in ancient times were very different; there were no pollutants or modified foods, which leads us to believe that the disease is not necessarily only linked to industrial factors,? she said.

A statement from AUC said the oldest known case came from a 2,700-year-old skeleton of a king in Russia.

Browns hire Brad Childress as OC (AP)

CLEVELAND ? Pat Shurmur brought in a close friend to help him fix Cleveland's broken offense.

Shurmur hired former Minnesota coach Brad Childress as his first offensive coordinator on Friday, reuniting two coaches who spent seven seasons together on Andy Reid's staff with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Browns confirmed Childress' hiring with a release that did not include any quotes.

Childress, who spent nearly five seasons with the Vikings before he was fired in 2010, will try to improve the Browns' dismal offense, which scored just 218 points last season, finished 29th in total yardage, 28th in rushing and 24th in passing. He'll also have input in the team's vital decision at starting quarterback. ? a choice that could impact the club for years.

The 55-year-old Childress was a logical choice to join the Browns, who went 4-12 in their first season under Shurmur. In addition to being tight with Shurmur, Childress is familiar with the West Coast offense the Browns installed last year and he's represented by agent Bob Lamonte, who also has Shurmur and Browns president Mike Holmgren as clients.

Shurmur juggled both head coach and coordinator duties during a troublesome first season in Cleveland. It's believed Shurmur will initially call Cleveland's plays next season but he intends to turn things over to Childress, who recently interviewed for Tampa Bay's head coaching job. Childress has only one season (2006) of experience calling plays.

Childress is the third former NFL head coach on Shurmur's staff, joining defensive coordinator Dick Jauron and senior defensive assistant Ray Rhodes.

Childress was Philadelphia's offensive coordinator from 2003-05 when Shurmur coached the Eagles quarterbacks. While he was with the Eagles, Childress went to three straight NFC title games and the Super Bowl in 2004.

Shurmur was asked about Childress during his season-ending news conference on Jan. 3.

"I know Brad very well," Shurmur said. "He and I worked together for a long time. He's a terrific coach."

Childress went 39-35 in four-plus seasons with the Vikings, twice leading them to the playoffs and going 1-2. Minnesota won division titles in 2008 and 2009, when the Vikings made it to the NFC title game with quarterback Brett Favre, whom Childress had famously picked up at the airport. But after a 3-7 start in 2010, Childress was fired by owner Zygi Wilf one day after the Vikings were blown out at home by rival Green Bay.

The Browns considered hiring an offensive coordinator before last season but didn't find a suitable candidate. Holmgren suggested Shurmur maintain play-calling duties to control the offense and build a stronger bond with second-year quarterback Colt McCoy. Shurmur, though, seemed overwhelmed at times as the Browns had some communication breakdowns and time-management issues.

The addition of Childress should free up Shurmur during the week as he prepares for games.

"I think what it will do is allow me to just step back and look down on some things in some areas that I may be able to contribute more," Shurmur said after the season. "That's a key piece."

Neil Young reunites with Crazy Horse

Victoria Will / AP

By Andy Greene, Rolling Stone

Neil Young is recording a new album with Crazy Horse, according to a post on Young's fansite Thrasher's Wheat?-- and now confirmed by Rolling Stone:?"It's looking good," a representative for Young says.?

According to the fansite report, Young shared the news over the weekend at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, at an event with Jonathan Demme to promote their new movie "Journeys."

The audience "erupted in applause" when Young said that he was working with Crazy Horse again. Multiple fans subsequently posted on Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina's Facebook wall to ask if the news was true. His response: "Yes!"?

Young began playing with the garage rock band in 1968 and they back him on many of his greatest albums, including "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere," "Zuma," "Rust Never Sleeps" and "Ragged Glory." Their last album was the 2003 rock opera "Greendale," though it didn't feature guitarist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro. The band (including Poncho) toured with Young in 2003 and 2004 to support the disc, though they haven't played together since the tour ended March 21st, 2004 at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Massachusetts. This has been the longest time Young has gone without performing with the group since their formation, though Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina played with Young on his 2007 disc "Chrome Dreams II" and the first few legs of the supporting tour. He was replaced by drummer Chad Cromwell in the summer of 2008 for unknown reasons.

The full line-up of Crazy Horse hasn't backed Young on an album since "Broken Arrow" in 1996, though they did record an LP in 2000 called Toast that Neil opted to shelf. "It's great rock & roll, very moody, kind of jazzy," Young told Rolling Stone in 2008, who was then contemplating a release of the disc. "It's really dark. It's got everything that the best Crazy Horse albums have had. It won't be the most commercial Crazy Horse album ever out."

In that same interview, we asked Neil if he had any desire to work with Crazy Horse again. "I'm not thinking about that right now," he said. "We'll just see what happens. Something might happen. You never know. Or something else we don't even know about could happen, and that would be really good, rather than go back. But if the vibe's right to go back and grab what's back there and yank it into the future, that's a big job."

According to the report on Thrasher's Wheat, Young said that he's already recorded one album with Crazy Horse and another is in the works. It's unclear if Toast is the finished album. There's word of a spring release for the album, but don't get your hopes up too high. Things change very quickly in the world of Neil Young. Remember that 30-date Buffalo Springfield that was supposedly happening this year??

Are you glad Young is reuniting with Crazy Horse? What's their best song? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

"We just learned a few minutes ago of the death of Mr. Abdulrazak Jbero, head of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent branch in Idlib.

Jbero, a Syrian national, served as first president of the country's Red Crescent society, an ICRC spokesman said.

"Jbero was on his way by car from Damascus to Idlib. He was shot. Circumstances are still unclear," Beatrice Megevand-Roggo, head of ICRC operations for the Near and Middle East, told Reuters.

"Regardless of the circumstances, the ICRC condemns this very severely," she said. "The lack of respect for medical services is still a great issue in Syria."

An ICRC statement said he was riding in a "vehicle clearly marked with a Red Crescent emblem" and expressed shock at the killing.

Syria's state-run media blamed "terrorists" for the attack.

Young child among latest dead
Meanwhile in parts of northern and central Syria, government forces clashed with army defectors Wednesday.

They stormed a number of rebellious districts, firing mortars and deploying snipers in violence that killed at least seven people, activists said.

In the town of Qusair near the central city of Homs, a woman and her 5-year-old child were killed when a shell struck their home during clashes between government troops and gunmen believed to be army defectors, activists said.

Three other people were killed during raids in a Damascus suburbs.

A Syrian military assault near Hama began Tuesday night, according to the Local Coordination Committees, an umbrella group of activists and opposition members.

Shells slammed into several districts around Hama's Bab Qebli area, the LCC said.

"It was impossible to rescue the wounded due to the ongoing arbitrary shelling," the group said in a statement.

'No idea what happened': US man vanishes in Syria

Two people were killed by sniper fire, according to the LCC and another opposition group, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Soldiers siding with a group of anti-regime army defectors known as the Free Syrian Army are known to be active in Hama, and some in the city said they were the target of the current government assault.

Residents near Hama reported hearing loud explosions throughout the night and on Wednesday and said phone lines to the targeted areas were down.

"They are trying to storm the Bab Qebli, Hamidiyeh and Malaab districts because defectors are there," said Ahmad al-Jimejmi, an activist who spoke by telephone from a town several miles away.

Body left at mother's house
A Jordanian man of Palestinian origin accused pro-regime forces of kidnapping and killing his 27-year-old son in Hama.

Hafez Abu Osbeh said his son, Ahmed, 27, was kidnapped last Friday, and his body was left outside his mother's residence three days later with gunshot wounds to his head.

He said a description of the kidnappers' vehicle pointed to government loyalists.

Pressure on Syria to end 10 months of bloodshed has so far produced few results.

Gulf states led by Saudi Arabia have pulled out of the Arab League's observers mission, asking the U.N. Security Council to intervene. Decisive action from the U.N. appeared unlikely, however, as Russia, a strong Syrian ally, has opposed moves like sanctions.

While Syria has approved extension of the observers' presence for another month, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem signaled that the crackdown on protests will continue, insisting that Syria will solve its own problems.

Al-Moallem's televised news conference underlined signs that the Arab strategy to solve the crisis is collapsing.

After announcing their pullout from the observers mission, Gulf Arab countries urged the U.N. Security Council to take all "necessary measures" to force the country to implement a League peace plan announced Sunday to create a national unity government in two months.

Damascus has rejected the plan as a violation of national sovereignty.

Sumatran elephants could be extinct in 30 years (AP)

JAKARTA, Indonesia ? Environmentalists say the Sumatran elephant could be extinct in the wild within the next three decades unless steps are taken to slow the breakneck pace of deforestation.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature recently listed the animals as "critically endangered," after their numbers dropped to between 2,400 and 2,800 from an estimated 5,000 in 1985.

The decline is largely because of destruction of their habitat, with forests all across the Indonesian island of Sumatra clear-cut for timber, palm oil or agricultural plantations.

Carlos Drews of the environmental group WWF says if urgent action is not taken to reverse this trend, "these magnificent animals are likely to go extinct" in less than 30 years.

Review: Pickler embraces traditional country on CD (AP)

Kellie Pickler, "100 Proof" (19/BNA)

Kellie Picker's North Carolina accent and unfiltered rural perspective has made her a polarizing figure since she competed as a 2006 "American Idol" contestant, finishing sixth. Some consider her big personality and hard-country style as charming; others see her as recalling an era left behind by modern-day Nashville.

Pickler deepens the line in the sand with the hardcore country of her third album, "100 Proof." One of six tunes the singer co-wrote, "Unlock That Honky Tonk," rings the battle call; its plea to open a locked dancehall could be an allegory that country music shouldn't forego the down-home sounds that gave the genre its identity. The quality of her performances proves Pickler is right.

For "100 Proof," Pickler enlists co-producers Frank Liddell, who has worked with Miranda Lambert, and Luke Wooten, who has worked with Dierks Bentley. Both Lambert and Bentley are successful contemporary artists who embrace traditional country music. Indeed, Pickler incorporates Lambert's take-no-prisoners attitude and Bentley's rambunctious use of acoustic and electric instruments.

However, even those artists haven't cut anything as drenched in old-fashioned heartbreak as the ballad "Stop Cheatin' On Me," which would have fit country queens Connie Smith or Tammy Wynette, the latter of whom, fittingly, is the subject of one of Pickler's new songs.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: Part of Pickler's appeal comes from her hard-knock story: She was raised by grandparents after her mother abandoned her and her father was beset by alcoholism and prison terms. Two new songs, co-written by Pickler, are directed at each parent, with the acoustic ballad "The Letter (To Daddy)" touchingly celebrating her father's return to sobriety and to firming up their relationship.

Jobs, re-election frame Obama's State of the Union (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama says his State of the Union address will be a blueprint for an economy that's "built to last" for the middle class.

He says he'll frame Tuesday's night national address to Congress around at least four themes. They are manufacturing, energy, education and what he calls "a return to American values."

The president briefly previewed elements of the speech in a video released by his re-election campaign Saturday to millions of Obama supporters.

Obama is seeking re-election in an atmosphere dominated by economic concerns, and his speech will amount to his vision for a second presidential term.

He says in the video that the nation must build an economy "that works for everyone, not just a wealthy few."

Central themes of the speech will be fairness, opportunity and rewards for hard work.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Vilified on the campaign trail by Republicans, President Barack Obama will stand before the nation Tuesday night with a State of the Union address designed to reframe the election-year debate on his terms, suggesting a stark contrast with his opponents on the economy and promising fairness and help for hurting families.

Obama is expected to offer new proposals to make college more affordable, to ease the housing crisis still slowing the economy, and to boost American manufacturing, according to people familiar with the speech. He will also promote unfinished parts of his jobs plan, including the extension of a payroll tax cut soon to expire.

In essence, this State of the Union is not so much about the year ahead as the four more years Obama wants after that.

Obama's splash of policy proposals will be less important than what he hopes they all add up to: a narrative of renewed American security. Obama will try to politically position himself as the one leading that fight for the middle class, with an overt call for help from Congress, and an implicit request for a second term from the public.

The timing comes as the nation is split about Obama's overall job performance. More people than not disapprove of his handling of the economy, he is showing real vulnerability among the independent voters who could swing the election, and most Americans think the country is on the wrong track.

So his mission will be to show leadership and ideas on topics that matter to people: jobs, housing, college, retirement security.

The White House sees the speech as a clear chance to outline a vision for re-election, yet carefully, without turning a national tradition into an overt campaign event.

On national security, Obama will defend his foreign policies but is not expected to announce new ones on Iran or any other front. He will ask the nation to reflect with him on a momentous year of change, including the end of the war in Iraq, the killing of al-Qaida terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and the Arab Spring protests of peoples clamoring for freedom.

But it will all be secondary to jobs at home.

In a winter season of politics dominated by his Republican competition, Obama will have a grand stage to himself, in a window between Republican primaries. He will try to use the moment to refocus the debate as he sees it: where the country has come, and where he wants to take it.

In doing so, Obama will come before a divided Congress with a burst of hope because the economy ? by far the most important issue to voters ? is showing life.

The unemployment rate is still at a troubling 8.5 percent, but at its lowest rate in nearly three years. Consumer confidence is up. Obama will use that as a springboard.

The president will try to draw a contrast of economic visions with Republicans, both his antagonists in Congress and the candidates for the Republican presidential nomination.

The foundation of Obama's speech is the one he gave in Kansas last month, when he declared that the middle class was a make-or-break moment and railed against "you're on your own" economics of the Republican Party. His theme then was about a government that ensures people get a fair shot to succeed.

That speech spelled out the values of Obama's election-year agenda. The State of the Union will be the blueprint to back it up.

Despite low expectations for legislation this year, Obama will offer short-term ideas that would require action from Congress. His travel schedule following his speech, to politically important regions, offers clues to the policies he was expected to unveil.

Both Phoenix and Las Vegas have been hard hit by foreclosures. Denver is where Obama outlined ways of helping college students deal with mounting school loan debt. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Detroit are home to a number of manufacturers. And Michigan was a major beneficiary of the president's decision to provide billions in federal loans to rescue General Motors and Chrysler in 2009.

For now, the main looming to-do item is an extension of a payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits, both due to expire by March. An Obama spokesman called that the "last must-do item of business" on Obama's congressional agenda, but the White House insists the president will make the case for more this year.

If anything, Republicans say Obama has made the chances of cooperation even dimmer just over the last several days. He enraged Republicans by installing a consumer watchdog chief by going around the Senate, which had blocked him, and then rejected a major oil pipeline project the GOP has embraced.

Obama is likely, once again, to offer ways in which a broken Washington must work together. Yet that theme seems but a dream given the gridlock he has been unable to change.

The State of the Union atmosphere offered a bit of comity last year, following the assassination attempt against Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. And yet 2011 was a year of utter dysfunction in Washington, with the partisanship getting so bad that the government nearly defaulted as the world watched in embarrassment.

The address remains an old-fashioned moment of national attention; 43 million people watched it on TV last year. The White House website will offer a live stream of the speech, promising graphics and other bonuses for people who watch it there, plus a panel of administration officials afterward with questions coming in through Twitter and Facebook.

Analysts: New software won't save Blackberry maker (AP)

NEW YORK ? In the trend-setting North American market, BlackBerry phones have gone from must-have messaging toys to outdated clunkers _all in the space of a few years. The new CEO of Research In Motion Ltd., the company behind the phones, says it can claw its way back to the top with new software, but analysts are deeply doubtful.

The two co-CEOs of the Canadian company resigned Sunday. The new CEO is Thorsten Heins, who was the company's chief operating officer.

Even though the company is in deep trouble and has seen its stock price fall 89 percent from the all-time high it hit in 2008, Heins said Monday that his appointment means "no seismic change" for the company. He's confident in the course laid out by his predecessors, which hinges on the software revamp.

The new software is called BlackBerry 10, and it's due in new smartphones late this year. For BlackBerry fans, it should be a welcome upgrade. It's based on QNX, an industrial-grade operating system that runs devices that need to be very reliable, like core Internet routers and anesthesia monitoring devices.

That means it's a stable platform that can give BlackBerrys a new look and new capabilities. BlackBerry 10 will have a completely new user interface, built from the ground up for touchscreen input and "very fluid," Heins said in an interview.

But it amounts to BlackBerry tossing out its own quirky, outdated software, first introduced in 1999, and adopting a slick, touch-oriented operating system, much like Android, Google Inc.'s popular smartphone software, and the software on the iPhone.

Heins said BlackBerry 10 is "extremely competitive" and insisted that RIM is "not in a catch-up race" with the makers other mobile operating systems. He emphasizes that BlackBerry 10 will offer "multitasking," or the ability to run several applications at the same time. This is something Google Inc.'s Android software and the iPhone operating system offer in a limited fashion.

Phone software developers generally stay away from full multitasking because it can shorten battery life considerably. Improved multitasking was one of the hallmarks of Palm Inc.'s webOS when it launched in 2009, but that didn't save it from obscurity.

One thing that could entice buyers: the new software will expand the choice of applications greatly, by running ones written for Android. There are hundreds of thousands of such apps, but it's unclear how many of them will run on BlackBerry 10 without modification.

The PlayBook, RIM's tablet computer, already runs an early version of BlackBerry 10. RIM had huge hopes for the device when it put it on sale in April, but quickly had to slash the price. In December, the tablets that originally cost $500 were selling for $200, below the cost of making them. RIM wrote off $485 million worth of inventory.

The PlayBook also illustrates the big challenge RIM is facing switching operating systems. It launched without an email program, apparently because it's very difficult to get QNX to work with the RIM servers that shunt emails around.

Application developers will also have to relearn their tools to write programs for BlackBerry 10, which could prove a big hurdle.

"The platform risks suffering from the same chicken and egg problem as many others_ users won't buy a device without any apps, and developers won't develop for a platform without any users," said Jan Dawson, an analyst with Ovum.

But the main problem analysts see with BlackBerry 10 is that the phones are set to come out so late. They were originally slated for early this year, but pushed to late this year. The company said that was because the right chips weren't available. When they come out, it will be more than five years since Apple released the first iPhone and set a new standard for phone software.

And even if BlackBerry 10 makes the phones more competitive, that doesn't mean it can reverse RIM's fortunes. Analyst Tavis McCourt noted that the history of phone makers who fall on hard times and try to turn things around is not encouraging.

"In fact, it is hard to think of a single successful case in the smartphone era," he wrote.

Ohio taking death penalty case to US Supreme Court (AP)

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio's governor and attorney general said Sunday the state is asking the U.S. Supreme Court for a ruling that Ohio's protocol for carrying out the death penalty is constitutional.

Gov. John Kasich and Attorney General Mike DeWine said in a statement that the state wants the high court to reverse a federal appeals court decision to delay the Wednesday execution of Charles Lorraine.

Lorraine was condemned to death in the 1986 slaying of an elderly Trumbull County couple. But the federal appeals court said Friday his execution should be delayed to review changes Ohio has made in carrying out the death penalty.

Lorraine argued that Ohio broke its promise to adhere strictly to its execution procedures. But the state said that deviations from the procedures during the last execution were minor and that an inmate's rights would not be violated by changes, such as which official announces the start and finish times of an injection.

"Attorney General Mike DeWine and I agree that Ohio's administration of capital punishment is constitutional and we have asked the Supreme Court of the United States to affirm that," the governor said in the statement.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling supported an earlier decision by U.S. District Court Judge Gregory Frost, who criticized the state for deviating from policy when an inmate was executed in November.

After the appeals court ruling, Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins sent a letter urging the two state officials to appeal. Watkins argued the federal courts have wrongly interfered with Ohio executions.

Records show Lorraine, 45, repeatedly stabbed 77-year-old Raymond Montgomery and his bedridden wife, 80-year-old Doris Montgomery, before burglarizing their Trumbull County home.

Lorraine's attorney, Allen L. Bohnert, has said the case is not about the crimes for which Lorraine was convicted and sentenced, but about the state's liability to apply its law equally.

"Homeland," Plummer early Globe winners (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The Golden Globe awards got down to the business of giving awards on Sunday with veteran actor Christopher Plummer winning the first honor of best supporting actor in a movie "The Beginners" and thriller "Homeland" being named best TV drama.

Plummer, 82, won the Golden Globe trophy for his portrayal of an elderly man who comes out as gay to his family in "Beginners," bringing both poignancy and a touch of humor to their lives.

Onstage holding his trophy, he thanked writer/director Mike Mills, saying that his "talent and wisdom made 'Beginners' such an enchantingly human story."

Also among early winners was Laura Dern, who was named best actress in a TV musical or comedy in her show, "Enlightened." Kate Winslet was named best actress in a TV movie or miniseries for "Mildred Pierce" and "Downtown Abbey" was best TV movie or miniseries.

The Golden Globe Awards are given out by the roughly 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at what annually is among the key events during Hollywood's awards season because of the media exposure it brings.

While film and TV honors take the spotlight at the ceremony, this year, all eyes and ears were on host Ricky Gervais who returned to the event this year after ruffling the feathers of HFPA members and more than a few Hollywood stars with his caustic wit.

Earlier on the red carpet, he promised "more of the same" and did not disappoint, tweaking the ribs of Johnny Depp and his 2010 box office flop "The Tourist" and chiding Jodie Foster and her 2011 movie, "The Beaver."

He also took some more jabs at the HFPA, which Gervais panned last year, by comparing the Golden Globes unfavorably to the Oscars, which are the film industry's top awards.

It's "just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem," Gervais said.

"The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton, honestly," he said, comparing the U.S. reality TV star and the Duchess of Cambridge.

A-LIST RED CARPET

Given their status as one of the most widely-watched award shows, this year's ceremony attracted Hollywood A-listers such as George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and numerous others who walked the fashion-filled red carpet ahead of dinner and the program.

"Modern Family" TV star Sofia Vergara showed off a form-fitting, teal-colored Vera Wang gown and Harry Winston jewels.

Many actresses wore strapless dresses or had plunging necklines and hand-tied bowties were a must among men. Even Uggie the dog from most-nominated film "The Artist" put his four paws on the carpet -- black tie around his neck, of course.

Later in the evening come the top awards for best film drama and comedy, as well as performances in those movies

Silent-era film "The Artist," a romantic tale shot in the style of old Hollywood, heads into Sunday night's ceremony with six nominations, including best comedy or musical. Late last week, it was named 2011's best movie at the Critics' Choice Awards and appears a good bet to take the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy.

HFPA voters also pick a winner of best film drama, and "The Descendants," starring Clooney as a father trying to keep his family together during a crisis, has the strongest shot at walking off a victor, O'Neil said. Although civil rights drama "The Help" also has been well-received in Hollywood this year.

Among actors and actresses, Meryl Streep looks to be a good pick to claim the trophy for best actress in a drama playing former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady." She faces a challenge from Viola Davis in "The Help," after Davis also picked up the Critics' Choice trophy.

Michelle Williams competes for best actress in a movie musical or comedy in "My Week with Marilyn" against the likes of "Saturday Night Live" comedian Kristen Wiig for "Bridesmaids."

Clooney with "Descendants" takes on Leonardo DiCaprio for "J. Edgar" and Brad Pitt in "Moneyball" in the best drama actor category, and "Artist" star, Frenchman Jean Dujardin, is the odds-on bet for best actor in a film musical or comedy.

Among TV shows, thriller "Homeland" is one of the new shows competing for best drama, taking on others such as "American Horror Story" and "Game of Thrones." Best comedy nominees feature past favorites such as "Glee" and "Modern Family."

The three-hour Golden Globe Awards show airs live on NBC.

NKorea to pardon convicts; generals back young Kim (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? North Korea said Tuesday it will issue special pardons for convicts, a rare move that appeared to be aimed at boosting the popularity of young new leader Kim Jong Un as he attempts to fill his late father's shoes.

Efforts to show Kim is firmly in control have provided a drumbeat of news reports in state media since his father, Kim Jong Il, died Dec. 17. On Tuesday, North Korea's state television showed top military officers again swearing fervent pledges of loyalty, vowing to become human "rifles and bombs" to defend Kim Jong Un, who was recently appointed supreme commander of the armed forces.

The amnesty, to be issued beginning Feb. 1, is to commemorate what would have been Kim Jong Il's 70th birthday in February and the 100th anniversary in April of the birth of his father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung.

The North's Korean Central News Agency did not say what sorts of crimes would be pardoned or how many inmates would be freed.

The pardons will be the first such dispensations in more than six years.

The measure appears aimed at winning public confidence for Kim Jong Un as the country struggles to revive its troubled economy, said Kim Kwang-in, a researcher at the Seoul-based North Korea Strategy Center.

A U.N. envoy on human rights in North Korea said last year that the country is estimated to hold up to 200,000 people in political prison camps. The North has denied the existence of gulags.

North Korea occasionally marks significant holidays by granting amnesties, and Pyongyang has promoted this year's Kim Il Sung centenary as a significant milestone in the country's history. North Korea last conducted such a special pardon in August 2005 to mark the 60th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, according to South Korea's Unification Ministry.

Soldiers and top military officers, meanwhile, pledged to "live or die" with Kim Jong Un and shouted slogans such as "Devoted defense of Kim Jong Un," state television showed. Later Monday, troops later marched outside Kumsusan Memorial Palace, where Kim Il Sung's body lies in state, as thick haze blanketed the plaza.

Neither Kim Jong Un nor senior ruling party officials were seen at the rally.

"We will build a 10,000-fold bulwark for protecting the supreme commander and become rifles and bombs to serve as Kim Jong Un first-line lifeguards and Kim Jong Un first-line death-defying corps," Ri Yong Ho, chief of the military's general staff, said, his voice resonating across the plaza as thousands of troops stood in neat columns.

A large signboard standing from the troops read, "Let's unite, unite and unite around dear comrade Kim Jong Un," the footage showed. In a well-choreographed joint pledge of allegiance, nine troops from army, air force and navy stood in a row and vowed "merciless retaliation" should their enemies attack.

North Korea has staged a series of rallies nationwide vowing to unite around Kim Jong Un and uphold his father's "military-first policy." During a massive public memorial for the elder Kim on Dec. 29, North Korea declared Kim Jong Un "supreme leader" of the ruling Workers' Party, the military and the country.

For the second time since Sunday, state television replayed a documentary focused on Kim Jong Un's military experience that shows him in the cockpit of a tank, galloping by on horseback and poring over documents at night.

North Korea is seeking to extend the Kim dynasty into a third generation as North Korea grapples with chronic food shortages and remains locked in a long-running standoff over its nuclear program.

Pyongyang and Washington recently met for talks on food aid and how to restart nuclear disarmament talks, but those discussions were suspended after Kim Jong Il's death.

The Korean peninsula remains in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. About 28,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea to deter potential North Korean aggression.

China's December inflation eases to 4.1 percent (AP)

BEIJING ? China's chronically high inflation edged down in December but stayed relatively strong, limiting Beijing's ability to stimulate its slowing economy.

Consumer prices overall rose 4.1 percent, down from the previous month's 4.2 percent but still above the year's official 4 percent target, data showed Thursday. Inflation in food costs, which account for up to half of monthly spending for poor families, accelerated to 9.1 percent from November's 8.8 percent.

"Inflation is coming down but not as fast as the government would have liked," said IHS Global Insight analyst Alistair Thornton. "The authorities are constrained in their ability to aggressively loosen monetary policy to revive growth."

Beijing tightened lending and investment curbs through early 2011 to cool an overheated economy and inflation that hit a 37-month high of 6.5 percent in July. But it reversed course late in the year as global demand slumped.

The central bank promised pro-growth policies for entrepreneurs following a government planning conference last weekend. Private companies that produce most of China's new jobs and wealth were hit hard by the export decline and clampdown on lending, forcing layoffs and raising the threat of unrest.

China's rapid economic growth slowed to 9.1 percent in the three months ending in September from the previous quarter's 9.6 percent. But the drop in export demand prompted fears China's expansion might slow too abruptly.

Industrial indicators show manufacturing and export orders contracted in November and December. China's own imports of oil, iron ore and other goods showed an unexpectedly sharp decline in December to 11.8 percent, barely half the previous monthly's level.

Analysts blame the price surge on strong consumer demand and the flood of money from Beijing's multibillion-dollar stimulus that helped China rebound quickly from the 2008 global economic crisis.

Chinese leaders have to craft their response to the latest slowdown carefully to avoid igniting a new bout of speculation and price rises.

Inflation can be politically explosive for the ruling Communist Party because it erodes the economic gains that underpin its claim to power. The latest price rises stoked frustration among a Chinese public that already is disgusted with rampant official corruption, a yawning gap between rich and poor, pollution and product safety scandals.

The December rise in Chinese food costs was driven by a 21.3 percent jump in the price of pork, the country's staple meat, and a 6.9 percent jump in grain prices.

"An increase in prices in month on month terms, which seems to be due to food prices, will give the government pause before reining in its efforts in keeping consumer prices in check," said Moody's Analytics in a report.

JP Morgan economists said they expect inflation to decline to below 3 percent by mid-2012 and for monetary policy to be "biased towards moderate easing."

The World Bank and private sector analysts have said China and other developing countries that have seen rapid economic growth in recent years are likely to face a rise in their long-term inflation.

For the full year, the government said China's consumer prices rose 5.4 percent.

"Inflation remained above the targeted 4 percent level every single month of the year," said Thornton. "That is going to remain a problem."

US: Iran 'flailing' for friends in Latin America

(AP) ? Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's upcoming four-nation tour of Latin America is a sign of desperation as sanctions increasingly isolate his country, the Obama administration said, as it warned the leader's hosts against expanding ties with Iran.

The State Department on Friday dismissed Ahmadinejad's planned visits to Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba and Ecuador next week as Iran "flailing" for new friends as the sanctions bite. Some lawmakers have expressed deep concern that Iran is boosting its presence in the Western Hemisphere to the detriment of U.S. national security interests.

"As the regime feels increasing pressure, it is desperate for friends and flailing around in interesting places to find new friends," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters. "We are making absolutely clear to countries around the world that now is not the time to be deepening ties, not security ties, not economic ties, with Iran."

"Rather, it's in the entire international community's interest to make clear to Iran that it's got a choice," she said. "It can remain in an international isolation, or it can comply with its obligations and start cooperating and rejoin the community of nations."

Nuland said Iran must stop defying international pressure to prove that its nuclear program is peaceful and that countries must make it clear that the only way to end its isolation is to come clean about its atomic ambitions. The U.S. and its allies accuse Iran of trying to develop atomic weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear energy program. Iran denies the charge.

Ahmadinejad has courted leftist, populist and anti-U.S. Latin American leaders for some time, notably Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. During his stop next week in Managua, Ahmadinejad is to attend Ortega's inauguration. The U.S. will be represented at the ceremony by a mid-ranking diplomat from the U.S. embassy, officials said.

In Venezuela, Chavez said on Friday that Ahmadinejad is coming to the region despite tensions in the Persian Gulf.

"The Yankees are determined to provoke wars, provoke tensions," Chavez said on television during a visit to the central state of Portuguesa.

Chavez said the "central purpose" of Ahmadinejad's visit is to attend Ortega's inauguration in Nicaragua.

Ahmadinejad's visit to Washington's backyard has raised eyebrows on Capitol Hill where the chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., likened it to a "tour of tyrants" that is proof of Iran's expanding interest in the region.

"Ahmadinejad's desire to strengthen ties with anti-American dictators and expand Iranian influence in the Western Hemisphere directly threatens U.S. security interests," she said in a statement.

"This is a threat which we cannot ignore," Ros-Lehtinen said, pledging to hold hearings on the matter to discuss what the administration is doing to counter Iranian outreach in the Western Hemisphere.

What Are the Next Big Energy and Climate Stories? What Would You Like Climate Progress to Cover in 2012?

In short, what would you like Climate Progress to cover in 2012 that we aren?t already covering.

CP tries to be responsive to readers.? You wanted more coverage of clean energy and solutions, so last year we brought on reporter Stephen Lacey to fill that gap, and? now CP has some of the best, most reposted and retweeted content on clean energy in the blogosphere or MSM.

We won?t be hiring anyone new this year, but are very much interested in what you?d like to see more coverage of.

Also, one thing CP tries hard to do is be ahead of the curve, to dive into subjects before the MSM catches on to them ? as we have with shale gas, the connection between global warming and extreme weather, food insecurity and Dust-Bowlification, the Keystone XL pipeline and protests against it, to name but a few.? What do you think are next big energy and climate stories that aren?t getting enough attention?

Demographics

Over the 8th and 9th of November 2011 1,166 members of the CLUB BBQ free email forwarding service completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 60.2% of the sample were male, 9.9% in their twenties, 29.2% in their thirties, 37.1% in their forties, and 23.8% in their fifties.

Our flat came with a built-in reverse osmosis (I presume that?s what it is, anyway!) drinking water filter, which we use only for drinking directly or filling the kettle. We just have a feeling that town water is just not that safe drunk directly, perhaps influenced by our previous flat where there was regularly black flakes coming through the old pipes, and we used a non-osmosis-based plugged into the mains purifier.

Hugh Jackman plans Broadway return as Houdini (AP)

NEW YORK ? Hugh Jackman liked his record-setting Broadway run so much this winter that he's handcuffing himself to a future musical about Harry Houdini.

Producers said Wednesday that Jackman, best known as the hairy Wolverine in "The X-Men" franchise, will star as the famed illusionist in "Houdini." It's scheduled to reach Broadway during the 2013-14 season.

Academy Award and six-time Emmy Award winner Aaron Sorkin of "West Wing" fame will write the story, and three-time Academy Award and four-time Grammy Award winner Stephen Schwartz of "Wicked" fame will write music and lyrics.

Jackman's one-man, 10-week Broadway concert show closed Sunday at the Broadhurst Theatre after having earned more than $2 million in its final week. It was the highest weekly gross recorded by the Shubert Organization, which owns the Broadhurst and 16 other Broadway theaters.

UK warns Iran over oil passageway threat (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's defense secretary warned Iran Thursday that any attempt to block the key global oil passageway the Strait of Hormuz would be illegal and unsuccessful ? hinting at a robust international response.

During his first visit to the Pentagon for talks with U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Philip Hammond told the Atlantic Council in Washington that the presence of British and American naval ships in the Persian Gulf would ensure the route is kept open for trade.

Iran has threatened to close the route in possible retaliation to new U.S. and European economic sanctions, a tactic the U.S. already has said it would not tolerate.

About one-sixth of the world's oil passes on tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, and analysts have warned the price of Brent crude could temporarily jump to as high as $210 if the strait is closed.

"Disruption to the flow of oil through Strait of Hormuz would threaten regional and global economic growth. Any attempt by Iran to do this would be illegal and unsuccessful," said Hammond, who was appointed as Britain's top defense minister in October.

U.S. officials have said the Navy's Fifth Fleet, based in nearby Bahrain, is prepared to defend the shipping route.

Britain has already downgraded ties with Iran following a major attack on its embassy in Tehran in November, which it insists was sanctioned by the country's ruling elite.

In response, Britain pulled all of its diplomats out of Iran and expelled Iranian diplomats from U.K. soil.

Though Hammond did not specifically threaten a military response if Iran blocks the movement of oil tankers, he warned Tehran that both British and U.S. forces would be close at hand.

"It is in all our interests that the arteries of global trade are kept free, opening and running," Hammond said. "For example, our joint naval presence in the Arabian Gulf, something our regional partners appreciate, is key to keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for international trade."

The U.S. and the 27-nation EU have both imposed sanctions against Iran over its contentious nuclear program, which the West insists is aimed at producing atomic weapons. Iran denies the charge, claiming the program aims to generate civilian electricity and produce medical radioisotopes needed to treat cancer patients.

"My working assumption is that they are working flat out" to produce a nuclear weapon, Hammond said during a question session at the Atlantic Council. However, he also insisted that Britain "would not be in favor of a pre-emptive strike on Iran."
