Gervais to launch Web series 'Learn English'

NEW YORK (AP) ? Ricky Gervais wants to teach you English.

The comedian announced Tuesday on his blog that he's working on a Web series called "Learn English with Ricky Gervais." It co-stars Gervais' frequent collaborator and foil Karl Pinkington.

Though Gervais didn't describe the series, it can be expected to be more comedic than educational.

The comedian said he had finished the pilot episode and that he would post it online for free. After that, he said he may charge a few dollars from viewers or seek sponsorship. Gervais said he hopes to subtitle the show in "as many languages as possible," including a Klingon version.

Stocks End Marginally Lower as Investors Remain Cautious ahead ...

Stocks struggled for direction in trading today before finishing marginally lower as investors remained on the sideline ahead of key central banks? meetings later this week.

Among the major gainers and losers in trading today were Shaw Group Inc. (NYSE: SHAW), which ended the day 55.45% higher at $41.49, Chicago Bridge & Iron Company (NYSE: CBI), which ended the day 14.15% lower at $34.94, and SUPERVALU Inc. (NYSE: SVU), which ended the day 12.56% higher at $2.24.

Stocks fluctuated between gains and losses throughout the day as investors remained cautious ahead of central banks? meeting. On Tuesday, the Federal Reserve will start its two-day monetary policy meeting. The Fed will release its policy statement on Wednesday. Investors are hoping that the central bank will hint at further monetary easing to boost economic growth when it releases its statement on Wednesday.

The European Central Bank (ECB) and Bank of England are scheduled to hold to their monetary policy meeting on Thursday.

ECB President, last week, pledged that the central bank will do whatever it takes to protect the euro zone. Draghi?s comments have raised hopes that the ECB will implement fresh measures to stem the euro zone debt crisis. Hopes of action from the ECB pushed European markets higher for a third day in a row, with the EURO STOXX 50 Index finishing 1.70% higher.

Mobile technology has also been lauded in the recent democratic uprisings in the Middle East. In Egypt, only about 10 percent of the population had landlines a decade ago, leaving much of the population without any phone access at all. Today, there are 82 million mobile phones in circulation, and the numbers are constantly growing.

The phones were ?game changers? during the Arab uprisings, not necessarily because of Twitter or Facebook ? many cellphones in Egypt, as in many rural parts of the developing world, don't have broadband access. Instead, ?for the first time, people were able to call or text each other and say ?Hey, let?s meet and go down to the square.? That wasn?t possible before,? says Ms. Nelson.

Penn State president says NCAA considered 4-year ban

Penn State faced the threat of a four-year ban on playing football before the NCAA issued its punishment this week for how it handled the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal, a university spokesman said Wednesday.

David La Torre said the potential for the multiyear "death penalty" was floated during discussions between Penn State President Rodney Erickson and NCAA officials before Monday, when Penn State was issued a $60 million fine, a four-year bowl game ban, reduced football scholarships and the forfeiture of 112 wins.

The school trustees met on the subject at State College hotel Wednesday, and afterward issued a statement calling the NCAA punishment "unfortunate" but better than the alternatives. Reporters were barred from the conference room where they met, and trustees avoided them after the meeting broke up.

The potential for a four-year ban, first reported by ESPN, showed how high the stakes were as college sports' governing body considered how to respond to an internal school investigation by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that found former coach Joe Paterno and three other top college officials helped conceal reports that Sandusky was abusing children.

NCAA president Mark Emmert said this week that if a total football ban had been imposed, other penalties would have accompanied it.

"If the death penalty were to be imposed, I'm quite sure that the executive committee and I ... would not have agreed to just the death penalty. It would have included other penalties as well," Emmert said as the sanctions were unveiled.

Many alumni, and some trustees, have expressed dismay at the NCAA action, which will cost Penn State tens of millions of dollars and likely cripple its football team for years to come.

Some trustees had expressed concern that Erickson may have violated a board rule that says the board must authorize the signing of "contracts, legal documents, and other obligations," but the board statement made no reference to that, saying they held a discussion but did not take any votes.

"The board finds the punitive sanctions difficult and the process with the NCAA unfortunate," they said. "But as we understand it, the alternatives were worse as confirmed by NCAA President Mark Emmert's recent statement that Penn State was likely facing a multi-year death sentence."

La Torre said Wednesday that Erickson had authority to act without the approval of the full board.

To learn more about microbe domestication, a research team compared the genome of Aspergillus oryzae, the fungus responsible for Japanese cuisine, with that of its wild relative Aspergillus flavus.

The wild child is a problem. It makes grains rot and can produce aflatoxin, a potent carcinogen. The destructive fungus shares 99.5 percent of its genome with its miso-making cousin. [John G. The tiny differences in the genomes suggest that selection during breeding affected genes related to the fungus' metabolism. UK cuts subsidies for onshore wind 10 percent from 2013

LONDON (Reuters) - The government on Wednesday announced a 10 percent cut in subsidies for onshore wind farms, sticking to a reduction announced on October and surprising investors who had expected a steeper reduction after months of delays to the announcement.

Onshore wind projects will receive 0.9 Renewable Obligations Certificates (ROCs) per megawatt-hour generated from 2013-17, instead of 1 ROC currently given, but the level could be reviewed in 2014 if there is a significant change in generation costs, the government said.

Offshore wind subsidies will also be cut, experiencing a 5 percent reduction from 2013-2015 to 1.9 ROCs and a 10 percent cut to 1.8 ROCs in 2016/17, the government said.

New Green Hills Restaurants: Kohana and Alegria Mexican |

I have been meaning to share the news of two new restaurants in Green Hills that are within the same development as our offices. With the busy summer selling season, I haven?t had time to put pen to paper but I found the review below on NashvilleScene.com and had to share!

The redeveloping retail strip along Richard Jones Road in Green Hills has a new restaurant anchor.?Kohana Japanese Restaurant?opened two weeks ago at 2002 Richard Jones.

Kohana is owned by local restaurateur Doris Cheung; it?s the sister restaurant to Kohana locations in Clarksville and the Streets of Indian Lake in Hendersonville. It?s a real family business; employees include Doris? sister Bobo and father Raymond, a sushi chef.

The menu features many of the standards of Japanese cuisine in America: teriyaki, tempura, noodles and katsu. But the Kohana folks are especially proud of their sushi lineup: 70 different sushi rolls, and if that?s not enough variety, diners can customize their own.

Kohana is working to secure a liquor license, but until then you can bring your own bottle of wine with no corking fee.

Closed Mondays, Kohana serves lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday (the restaurant closes for a couple hours between lunch and dinner Tuesday through Friday). The phone number is 915-2415.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the same strip on Richard Jones,?Alegria Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Bar?is poised to open in the next week or two. The owner is restaurateur Georges Haddad.

Describing its food as ?modern Mexican? cuisine, Alegria has posted some impressive interior shots on Facebook, with bright, splashy colors, cozy booths and chic chandeliers. We hear Alegria will seat 200 diners, with 60 more spots out on the margarita-friendly patio. There?s also a private party room.

Alegria promises an extensive tequila menu. They are also currently taking draft-beer suggestions on Facebook.

Auto-centric Green Hills diners will be happy to know there?s a 400-car garage behind the restaurant.

Haddad plans to open the doors later this month. (The target date is Friday, July 13, give or take a few days.) For updates, follow Alegria Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Bar on Facebook, or @TasteOfAlegria on Twitter.
