UCLA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Anthony Barr hasn't decided on move to NFL

A report indicated linebacker Anthony Barr was ready to make an announcement that he will stay at UCLA for his senior season, but Barr said he hasn't made up his mind.

"I've not made a decision," Barr said Monday. "(Returning) is what I'm leaning toward, but it's not 100 percent. I would like to get my evaluation back, then things will come to fruition."

Barr is waiting for his NFL draft evaluation papers, which will give him an idea of which round he would be selected.

Coach Jim Mora said he isn't sure if Barr will stay or go.

"I really haven't asked him in last couple days," he said. "We'll see. He's got a lot to decide on."

It's a good problem for Barr to have. Barr was toiling as a running back until he found his niche at linebacker this season. He said this experience has been like the recruiting process all over again.

Bear of a practice

UCLA started to implement its gameplan for Baylor during Monday's practice. Defense must be a focal point since Baylor's offense, led by quarterback Nick Florence, averages 578.8 yards and 44.1 points per game.

Asked if his defense is relishing the challenge, Mora said: "I hope they do. When we've faced quarterbacks that have had a lot of success going into the game, we've played pretty well.

"It's a unique challenge. They go fast. They have an All-American receiver (Terrance Williams). They score points. We're competitors, competitive kids

who love challenges. Their attitude the last week or so has been great."

Florence has thrown for 4,121 yards for an average of 343.4 per game. But Barr warns against focusing solely on the passing game.

"The thing people don't really talk about is their running game," Barr said. "They average almost 250 yards rushing. In order to beat them, we have to stop the run first. That's where it all starts.

"You see a spread offense and you don't think running game. You think passing, vertical routes and stuff like that."

Also ...

Defensive back Tevin McDonald was not at practice. Mora said he missed practice for personal reasons and he will be back for today's workout. ... UCLA is finished with final exams, and Mora didn't expect anyone to be academically ineligible. ... Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, who quarterbacked Bayor last season, set a record for most NFL jerseys sold in a single season, ESPN reported. Mora has a son who named his snake RG3 after Griffin, but he said his son doesn't have one of his No. 10 jerseys. Baylor quarterback Nick Florence is still looking to build a following. He has 1,460 Twitter followers.

To revert breast cancer cells, give them the squeeze

BERKELEY ?

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have put the squeeze ? literally ? on malignant mammary cells to guide them back into a normal growth pattern.

Malignant Breast Cells

Shown are fluorescence images of uncompressed (left) and compressed (right) colonies of malignant breast epithelial cells. Compressed colonies are smaller and more organized. (Images courtesy of Fletcher Lab)

The findings, presented today (Monday, Dec. 17) at the annual meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology in San Francisco, show for the first time that mechanical forces alone can revert and stop the out-of-control growth of cancer cells. This change happens even though the genetic mutations responsible for malignancy remain, setting up a nature-versus-nurture battle in determining a cell?s fate.

?We are showing that tissue organization is sensitive to mechanical inputs from the environment at the beginning stages of growth and development,? said principal investigator Daniel Fletcher, professor of bioengineering at UC Berkeley and faculty scientist at the Berkeley Lab. ?An early signal, in the form of compression, appears to get these malignant cells back on the right track.?

Throughout a woman?s life, breast tissue grows, shrinks and shifts in a highly organized way in response to changes in her reproductive cycle. For instance, when forming acini, the berry-shaped structures that secrete milk during lactation, healthy breast cells will rotate as they form an organized structure. And, importantly, the cells stop growing when they are supposed to.

One of the early hallmarks of breast cancer is the breakdown of this normal growth pattern. Not only do cancer cells continue to grow irregularly when they shouldn?t, recent studies have shown that they do not rotate coherently when forming acini.

While the traditional view of cancer development focuses on the genetic mutations within the cell, Mina Bissell, Distinguished Scientist at the Berkeley Lab, conducted pioneering experiments that showed that a malignant cell is not doomed to become a tumor, but that its fate is dependent on its interaction with the surrounding microenvironment. Her experiments showed that manipulation of this environment, through the introduction of biochemical inhibitors, could tame mutated mammary cells into behaving normally.

The latest work from Fletcher?s lab, in collaboration with Bissell?s lab, takes a major step forward by introducing the concept of mechanical rather than chemical influences on cancer cell growth. Gautham Venugopalan, a member of Fletcher?s lab, conducted the new experiments as part of his recently completed Ph.D. dissertation at UC Berkeley.

?People have known for centuries that physical force can influence our bodies,? said Venugopalan. ?When we lift weights, our muscles get bigger. The force of gravity is essential to keeping our bones strong. Here we show that physical force can play a role in the growth ? and reversion ? of cancer cells.?

Venugopalan and collaborators grew malignant breast epithelial cells in a gelatin-like substance that had been injected into flexible silicone chambers. The flexible chambers allowed the researchers to apply a compressive force in the first stages of cell development.

Over time, the compressed malignant cells grew into more organized, healthy-looking acini that resembled normal structures, compared with malignant cells that were not compressed. The researchers used time-lapse microscopy over several days to show that early compression also induced coherent rotation in the malignant cells, a characteristic feature of normal development.

Notably, those cells stopped growing once the breast tissue structure was formed, even though the compressive force had been removed.

?Malignant cells have not completely forgotten how to be healthy; they just need the right cues to guide them back into a healthy growth pattern,? said Venugopalan.

Researchers further added a drug that blocked E-cadherin, a protein that helps cells adhere to their neighbors. When they did this, the malignant cells returned to their disorganized, cancerous appearance, negating the effects of compression and demonstrating the importance of cell-to-cell communication in organized structure formation.

It should be noted that the researchers are not proposing the development of compression bras as a treatment for breast cancer. ?Compression, in and of itself, is not likely to be a therapy,? said Fletcher. ?But this does give us new clues to track down the molecules and structures that could eventually be targeted for therapies.?

The National Institutes of Health helped fund this research through its Physical Science-Oncology program.

Google Maps (for iPhone)

Our short national nightmare is over. People can stop heading to the wrong cities, falling off of warped bridges, and dying of heat strokes while using Apple Maps. iPhone owners running iOS 6 can now restore Google Maps to its prominent place on the home screen for free, thanks to a new, standalone Google Maps app that's available in Apple's App Store. Also, for the first time, it brings parity with Android by including a beta version of voice-enabled car navigation. Just as Google Maps Navigation works well on Android phones, Google Maps now does the same thing on iPhones; the only difference is that you have to download it first. It's not the best at car navigation, but thanks to everything else it offers, it's an easy Editors' Choice for iPhone GPS?apps.

Interface, Map Graphics, and POI Search
In some ways, the new Google Maps app is actually smoother, more attractive, and more fun to use than the previous version. Fire it up and you'll see a 2D overhead map view of your current location. The little blue icon still pulses with light when it has a lock on your GPS location, but it's more subtle now, without the rings that emanated from it in earlier versions. Across the top is a search bar. To the right is a small icon that gives you fast access to your saved destinations, both from here and your regular Google desktop account.

Map and satellite graphics look fantastic on the iPhone 5's large Retina screen, with 3D buildings appearing in Manhattan as you zoom in closer, thanks to the new vector-based rendering engine. You can tip the view over from 2D to 3D even in pedestrian mode. Google's famed Street Views for major cities make an appearance as well. Tap the small vertical bar of dots on the bottom right, and a panel opens up giving options for real-time traffic, public transit, satellite view, and a shortcut to the Google Earth app (if you have it installed). Highlight a point of interest, and Google will display its identity on screen. Then you can swipe up to see the location, reviews, contact information, and other relevant data.

Inputting destinations for navigation is simple; you tap the navigation icon near the top, which looks like a junction arrow that splits in two directions. You can type in anything: a street address, a point of interest, a search term, whatever you want?and then select it from the resulting list below. The app also presents you with alternative routes in each mode, with a visual of how they look on the map, so you can choose whether you'd want to take a given highway or subway. There's no way to tell it up front if you want the fastest or shortest routes, or to avoid highways, though. Regardless, during my tests, everything I searched for resulted in the correct answers, just as you would expect from Google.

Car Navigation, Other Features, and Conclusions
Many iPhone users prized Google Maps for its solid, real-time pedestrian navigation, but new to this version is a voice prompt-based mode that you can use when behind the wheel. It takes a few extra taps to begin voice navigation. Once on the road, the car navigation view is a little sparse compared with what you see on TomTom, Garmin, and other car-focused navigation apps. For example, there's no current speed, road speed limit display, or configurable speed limit alerts. There's also no way to display the trip ETA, the current time, and the distance remaining simultaneously.

Audio prompts are excellent, with a smooth voice, correct pronunciation, and detailed, complete sentences at just the right times. When Google first launched Google Maps Navigation on the Motorola Droid in 2009, voice prompts were a total mess, so this is a clear victory. Google has done a lot to add photo-realistic junction views and destination photos to its navigation, but there still aren't enough of them. In fact, if there's no photo available of a highway exit, you don't see any lane assistance at all?either a 3D rendering or 2D lane arrows?which is disappointing.?

All of the routes I tested in Manhattan and in New Jersey were accurate and worked well. As always, Google Maps data is super-accurate; it even knew that you couldn't access the Lincoln Tunnel from West 34th street traveling east, and that I had to go up to West 40th Street. Real-time traffic information was also on the mark, for the most part, although saying there are "delays" in New York City in the afternoon is like saying there are stars in the sky at night.?In addition to voice navigation, Google Maps now has bike directions and Zagat reviews, and it caches maps offline in case you're outside of a cellular coverage area.

Overall, aside from some issues with the 3D interface while driving, Google Maps is a must-download for iPhone users, whether you're on foot or behind the wheel. There's no iPad version yet, unfortunately, though I imagine Google will rectify that sooner rather than later. Just as I've said in our Google Maps Navigation?review, it does a nice job with car navigation, but dedicated car nav apps still offer more, and work more like standalone GPS devices. I wouldn't automatically discount every paid navigation app from consideration, but make no mistake: Google Maps for the iPhone is a comprehensive GPS and voice navigation solution for walking, driving, biking, and taking public transit. I can't help but wonder if Apple even needs to bother fixing its own maps anymore.

Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ...

Investing in commercial real estate takes a great deal of effort and time. The rewards can outweigh its costs though. The advice in the following article will help you get the most from your investment.

Be sure to negotiate on the fact of what you are, the seller or buyer. Ensure that your voice is heard, and that you are offering-or receiving-a price that is fair for both parties.

If you are thinking of selling a commercial property, your experience will be much smoother if you utilize the services of a professional and have it properly inspected. If the inspections turn up any problems, remediate them before listing the property for sale.

TIP! Before buying a commercial property, research its net operating income to make sure you don?t lose money. In order to be successful and stay profitable, watch this number closely, and take steps to make certain it does not fall into the negatives.

Look for the motivated sellers. Sometimes you will find sellers who are willing and able to sell well below the market value. You want to find someone who is motivated as this is the only way you can find some deals.

Advertise your commercial real estate far and wide. There are a lot of people who make the big mistake who think that only local people want to purchase their property. Some private investors will be interested in properties outside of their areas if the price is low.

Get yourself set up online before you buy any property. Completing a profile on LinkedIn is an excellent starting point, or you might start a blog. Try to learn about SEO to optimize your site. The intent here is for anyone you deal with being able to find you easily, just by typing your name into their favorite search engine.

TIP! A good starting point for people looking to purchase real estate is to go online and scour the treasure trove of beneficial information that can help new investors, as well as seasoned professionals. Learning is an ongoing process, and you can never know enough.

The relationship you forge with private lenders and investors when purchasing commercial property is tremendously important. Some of the best deals are made on properties that are never even publicly listed. Knowing the right people and being in the right place at the right time is the only way to get in on such deals.

You may need to make some changes to the commercial space you just rented before moving in. It may simply be cosmetic issues that need addressing, such as a fresh coat of paint or some furniture rearrangement. However, you might have to remove or relocate some of your walls so that you can get the most out of your space. The contract you negotiate should clearly spell out whether you or your landlord will pay for these changes, or whether the cost will be shared and in what proportions.

Ensure that you?re dealing with a customer-conscious company prior to making a purchase. If you don?t do this, you could end up with a bad deal and lose more money as time goes on.

TIP! If your property deal requires inspections (as it should), look at the inspector?s credentials. This is true when working with pest or insect removal, since many people who are non-accredited work in these fields.

When selling a property, you should make certain that whatever price you set is realistic. A variety of different criteria require consideration in order to increase or decrease your property value.

Be patient and calm while you navigate purchasing commercial real estate. You should never rush into a possible investment. You?ll regret it quickly if your lack of research results in a property without much re-sale value. Realize that it can sometimes take at least one year for the proper investment opportunity to present itself.

Take a look around properties you are interested in. Consider going with a contractor when you are looking at places you want to buy. Once you have all the details, start drafting proposals and enter negotiations with the seller. Before making any commitment, you should carefully evaluate each offer and counteroffer.

TIP! Always go through the disclosures of an agent before hiring him or her. There is a possibility of a condition called dual agency.

Experts recommend not purchasing unit blocks that have fewer than 10 units in them. This is because they can be more difficult to manage than smaller properties. This is far from a hard and fast rule however. If careful research leads you to believe a given small complex will be profitable, don?t rule it out simply because of its size alone.

When searching for a commercial real estate broker, ask about their primary source of income. This should be a topic that can be openly discussed and should allow you to learn if there are shared interests between you and them. Once you understand how the broker profits from the transaction, you can choose one whose profit centers align with your business goals.

Know what your specific needs are prior to starting your commercial real estate hunt. Draw up a list including all the features your ideal property should have, such as property size and location, or the total number of restrooms, offices, etc.

TIP! Be aware that there could be drastic inflation in the time after you invest in commercial real estate. In the past, many leases had built-in clauses that made adjustments according to the Consumer Price Index, which protected signers from inflation.

Determine the negotiation methods of real estate brokers you are considering. Ask how they were trained and how much experience they have. You also want to know they are ethical in their approach to finding the best deals. Request evidence of previous negotiations, both successes and failures.

Location is key in commercial real estate. Find out more about the neighborhood. Look at the growth in similar areas. You?re not only thinking about the here and now; you want to look a decade down the line too. Pick an area with the potential for sustainable growth.

When you buy commercial property, you can profit very well because of this. Use the advice you have learned here so you can give yourself the best chance of success in commercial real estate.

TIP! Try to aim large when considering commercial real estate property. Managing a slightly larger unit does really take that much more work, and doing so actually increases your profit on a per unit basis.

PFT: Giants' Bradshaw ruled out for Sunday

Philadelphia Eagles v Dallas CowboysGetty Images

All through the week we do our best to bring you all the biggest injury news from around the league.

Inevitably, a few injuries fall through the cracks and don?t wind up with a spotlight on them at any point. That?s why we?ve got the injury report roundup every week to make sure that nothing makes it entirely through the net before the weekend starts.

Giants at Falcons

Cornerback Prince Amukamara (hamstring), running back Ahmad Bradshaw (knee,?foot), safety Kenny Phillips (knee) and safety Tyler Sash (hamstring) are all out for the Giants. Linebacker Michael Boley (back) is questionable and wide receiver Hakeem Nicks (knee) is probable. Falcons wide receiver Roddy White (knee) is going to be a game-time decision, as will safety William Moore (hamstring), defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (ribs) and wide receiver Harry Douglas (ribs).

Broncos at Ravens

The Broncos are relatively healthy. Guard Chris Kuper and linebacker Wesley Woodyard are both questionable with ankle injuries while wide receiver DeMaryius Thomas (shoulder) is probable to be in the lineup. Linebacker Jameel McClain (neck) is the only Raven ruled out and tight end Ed Dickson (knee) is doubtful, but they have several game-time decisions to make. Linebacker Terrell Suggs (biceps), safety Bernard Pollard (chest), linebacker Dannell Ellerbee (ankle), cornerback Jimmy Smith (abdomen), defensive end Pernell McPhee (thigh) and guard Marshal Yanda (ankle) are all questionable. Linebacker Ray Lewis (triceps) is practicing, but is not listed on the injury report since he is still on injured reserve.

Packers at Bears

The Packers will be without wide receiver Jordy Nelson (hamstring), safety Charles Woodson (collarbone), defensive end C.J. Wilson (knee) and running back James Starks (knee). Guard Josh Sitton is questionable after injuring his hip in practice on Thursday and linebacker Clay Matthews (hamstring) is set to return after missing four games. Wide receiver Earl Bennett (concussion), cornerback Tim Jennings (shoulder) and linebacker Brian Urlacher (hamstring) are out again for the Bears. They could be thin on the defensive line as defensive tackle Henry Melton (chest) and defensive end Shea McClellin (knee) are doubtful for the game.

Redskins at Browns

If you?ve been here at any point this week, you know Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is going to be a game-time decision with a sprained knee. Linebacker London Fletcher (ankle) and tackle Trent Williams (thigh) are also questionable for Washington. The Browns have nine probable players, leaving them looking almost as fit as a fiddle for Sunday.

Colts at Texans

The Colts have ruled out running back Delone Carter (ankle), linebacker Kavell Conner (hamstring), tackle Winston Justice (biceps), center Samson Satele (ankle) and S Tom Zbikowski (knee) for their battle with the AFC South leaders. Texans linebacker Brooks Reed will miss another game with a groin injury and cornerback Alan Ball (foot) has also been ruled out.

Jaguars at Dolphins

It?s awfully lonely in the Jaguars backfield with running backs Rashad Jennings (concussion), Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) and Jordan Todman (calf) all ruled out. Jacksonville also ruled out cornerback?Aaron Ross (calf) and defensive end George Selvie (concussion) on Friday. Dolphins wide receiver Davone Bess will miss a game for the first time in his career as a result of a back injury and linebacker Koa Misi (ankle) is out as well.

Buccaneers at Saints

Things are pretty healthy on the Tampa side of things with defensive end Da?Quan Bowers (hamstring) and cornerback LeQuan Lewis (knee) questionable and a few other probable players. The Saints are down right tackles Zach Strief (ankle) and Charles Brown (knee) this week. Running back Chris Ivory and safety Malcolm Jenkins will both miss the game with hamstring injuries.

Vikings at Rams

The Vikings have 10 probable players and just cornerback Antoine Winfield (knee) listed as questionable. That tops the Rams, who have nine probables and just defensive tackle Jermelle Cudjo (foot).

Lions at Cardinals

Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley (shoulder) and tight end Brandon Pettigrew (ankle) are doubtful for the Lions. Safety Louis Delmas (knee) is questionable, as is Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell (calf). Wide receiver Early Doucet has been ruled out because of a concussion.

Seahawks at Bills

Wide receiver Sidney Rice (foot) is probable for the Seahawks, but cornerbacks Walter Thurmond and Marcus Trufant are both out with hamstring injuries. Center Eric Wood (knee) remains out for the Bills, while defensive end Mark Anderson (knee) is questionable in his attempt to return after several weeks on the sideline. Safety Jairus Byrd (shin), linebacker Nick Barnett (knee), defensive end Marcell Dareus (shoulder) and guard Andy Levitre (knee) are also questionable for Buffalo.

Panthers at Chargers

The Panthers will be without running back Jonathan Stewart (ankle) and wide receiver Brandon LaFell is questionable thanks to a toe injury. Linebacker DeMorrio Williams (ankle) is out for San Diego while running back Ronnie Brown (hamstring), linebacker Donald Butler (groin), tackle Jeromey Clary (knee) and guard Tyronne Green (ankle) are all doubtful.

Steelers at Cowboys

Tackle Willie Colon?s been ruled out by the Steelers and it?s thought his knee injury will end his season. Cornerback Ike Taylor (ankle) and tackle Mike Adams (ankle) have also been ruled out for Pittsburgh. Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff won?t play after having sports hernia surgery and wide receiver Dez Bryant is questionable with the finger injury we?ve been following all week. Bryant says he?s playing, as does linebacker DeMarcus Ware (elbow) but the outlook is a bit less certain for guard Nate Livings and cornerback Morris Claiborne because of concussions.

Chiefs at Raiders

The Chiefs haven?t placed wide receiver Dwayne Bowe (ribs) on injured reserve, so he?s been ruled out. Three offensive linemen ? tackle Branden Albert (back), guard Jon Asamoah (thumb) and guard Ryan Lilja (knee) ? are questionable while guard Russ Hochstein (back) is doubtful. Defensive tackle Richard Seymour (hamstring, knee) could make his return for the Raiders after getting the questionable tag, a designation he shares with safety Tyvon Branch (neck, ankle).

49ers at Patriots

The 49ers travel across the country in good shape with just wide receiver Mario Manningham (shoulder) expected to miss the game after being listed as doubtful. The Patriots listed 19 players as questionable, including tight end Rob Gronkowski (forearm). Gronkowski isn?t expected to play and forecasting the status for the many questionable Patriots every week tends to be a waste of time.
