US has more Internet-connected gadgets than people

4 hrs.

There are now more Internet-connected devices, such as smartphones, tablets and gaming consoles, in the U.S. than there are people: 425 million gadgets in homes, according to The NPD Group.

While laptop and desktop?computers remain the primary way for Americans to go online from home, these other means?are "diminishing the computer's relevance" to the Internet, said John?Buffone, NPD's director of device research for Connected Intelligence, in a report.

The "shared screen" experience???streaming a movie or photos from your smartphone or tablet to the TV???is expected to be used by more Americans in 2013, he said.?

"Smaller screens such as the smartphone have the greatest reach now with an estimated 133 million users, with tablets contributing another 31.8 million screens."

There are?311.5 million Americans, and many of them have a growing appetite for such screen-sharing. But using the TV itself as an Internet device has yet to catch on, in part because consumers haven't much wanted to fiddle with them (many of us?view the TV as simple a great couch potato device only, no work, please). Manufacturers at the Consumer Electronics Show next week plan to make a stronger?case for them this year.

Buffone says that through this year, "multi-screen and multi-device synergy will lead the growth in the broader connected device market, but only if services consumers desire are delivered in a simplistic manner."

The NPD Group based its findings on a survey of more than 4,000 U.S. consumers over age 18 in the fourth quarter of 2012. ?Routers, modems mobile hot spots and pay TV set-top boxes were not included as Internet-connected products, nor were e-readers because of the "limited content" they offer in terms of a true Internet device.

Trip To Mars Could Damage Astronauts' Brains

No amount of engineering, terraforming, or any other science fiction magic will ever make any other body within human reach survivable for long

Space is far more hostile than any planet, and we can manage to survive up there for quite a long time.

Terraforming is not "magic", and small scale examples of humans changing conditions where they live abound.

Even the most hostile environments on earth usually have at least SOME oxygen, water, soil, air pressure

The moon even has most of those.

Mars has all of them.

no colony out there could survive for long without constant support from earth.

They will not if you never try.

We are stuck here. There is no escape.

You might be, but all the trapping being done is by your own mind, not any kind of scientific basis.

Promising compound restores memory loss and reverses symptoms of Alzheimer's in mice

Jan. 2, 2013 ? A new ray of hope has broken through the clouded outcomes associated with Alzheimer's disease. A new research report published in January 2013 print issue of the FASEB Journal by scientists from the National Institutes of Health shows that when a molecule called TFP5 is injected into mice with disease that is the equivalent of human Alzheimer's, symptoms are reversed and memory is restored -- without obvious toxic side effects.

"We hope that clinical trial studies in AD patients should yield an extended and a better quality of life as observed in mice upon TFP5 treatment," said Harish C. Pant, Ph.D., a senior researcher involved in the work from the Laboratory of Neurochemistry at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders at Stroke at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. "Therefore, we suggest that TFP5 should be an effective therapeutic compound."

To make this discovery, Pant and colleagues used mice with a disease considered the equivalent of Alzheimer's. One set of these mice were injected with the small molecule TFP5, while the other was injected with saline as placebo. The mice, after a series of intraperitoneal injections of TFP5, displayed a substantial reduction in the various disease symptoms along with restoration of memory loss. In addition, the mice receiving TFP5 injections experienced no weight loss, neurological stress (anxiety) or signs of toxicity. The disease in the placebo mice, however, progressed normally as expected. TFP5 was derived from the regulator of a key brain enzyme, called Cdk5. The over activation of Cdk5 is implicated in the formation of plaques and tangles, the major hallmark of Alzheimer's disease.

"The next step is to find out if this molecule can have the same effects in people, and if not, to find out which molecule will," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of the FASEB Journal. "Now that we know that we can target the basic molecular defects in Alzheimer's disease, we can hope for treatments far better -- and more specific -- than anything we have today."

LIVE: Final Day Before The Fiscal Cliff - Business Insider

After a LONG day that ended around 2 AM on Tuesday, the Senate has overwhelmingly voted to approve a Fiscal Cliff deal, sending legislation for final approval in the House.

There was a little nervousness that liberals might not be on board the deal, but the bill passed easily 89-8.

All day, liberal pundits were slamming Obama for caving too early, and not going over the Fiscal Cliff, when it's presumed he would have more leverage.

The basic gist of the agreement is this: taxes will rise for individuals making $400K or more and families making $450K or more.

These thresholds are higher than Democrats would like, but Democrats are getting an Unemployment Insurance extension, as well as an extension of other credits.

There is also a permanent fix to the Alternative Minimum Tax indexing.

As for the "sequester" that will be delayed for two months.

This part is infuriating conservatives, who see the spending cuts delayed once again, while taxes rise on many Americans (even though the income taxes will stay low for most taxpayers, payroll taxes will rise).

Our full liveblog is below. You can read the full text of the American Taxpayer Relief Act Of 2012 here. Note that the bill is 157 pages long, with all kinds of tax credit extensions you never imagined were part of the Fiscal Cliff. That also makes it infuriating to conservatives, who see a big pork-filled bill passed at 2 AM. Washington at its worst.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took the floor briefly to inform lawmakers that negotiations are still ongoing, but that they don't have anything to vote on yet.?

"There are still some issues that need to be resolved before we can bring legislation to the floor," Reid said. "Negotiations are continuing as we speak."?

"We really are running out of time," he added. "Americans are threatened with a tax hike in a few hours."

Harkin, a staunch liberal, took the Senate floor after Reid, and blasted his party for making too many concessions on the fiscal cliff ? specifically by raising the threshold for extending the Bush tax cuts to $450,000, up from the $250,000 that President Barack Obama campaigned on.?

"This looks like a very bad deal."?

Harkin's sentiments have been echoed by many Democrats, who are frustrated with last night's developments. After talks failed in the Senate yesterday, fiscal cliff negotiations turned into a backroom affair between Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Vice President Joe Biden. According to reports, Biden also agreed to concede to Republican demands on the estate tax, in addition to agreeing to raise the income threshold for the Bush tax cuts.?

Washington Post blogger Ezra Klein has a pretty brutal takedown of the White House's leadership on the fiscal cliff. The gist of his argument is that while Obama entered the fiscal cliff negotiations with the apparent advantage, he has caved every step of the way.?

Here's the key passage:?

The Republicans plan to say that now that they broke their pledge and voted for a tax increase, they?ll insist on a dollar of spending cuts for every dollar of debt-ceiling increase ? the so-called ?Boehner rule?. The White House plans to insist that it won?t negotiate over the debt ceiling at all.

Republicans I?ve spoken to laugh at this bluster. Obama is already negotiating over the debt ceiling, they point out. He began the fiscal cliff negotiations by saying he wanted a permanent solution to the debt ceiling. Then it was a two-year increase in the debt limit. Now he?s going to sign off on a mini-deal that doesn?t increase the debt ceiling at all. Does that really sound like someone who?s going to hold firm when faced with global economic chaos? The White House always talks tough at the beginning of negotiations and then always folds at the end. Republicans are confident that the debt ceiling will be no different.

Slate blogger Matt Yglesias has a similar take here. The White House, Ygelesias argues, lost any credibility it had by putting the debt ceiling on the table despite insisting that Obama wouldn't negotiate on raising the debt limit. Even worse, by including the debt ceiling in a "grand bargain" package delayed until 2015 , the Obama White House is actually institutionalizing the practice of negotiating on the debt ceiling.?

The AP reports that a deal could be imminent, but that both sides are still at odds over how to deal with the sequester,?the package of dramatic budget cuts scheduled to go into effect at midnight.?

According to the AP, the deal would include returning tax rates for households earning over $450,000 to 39 percent, the same rate that they were under President Bill Clinton. The deal would also extend unemployment benefits and raise the tax on estates over $5 million from 35% to 40%.?

But Republicans are pushing for the fiscal cliff deal to include a three month delay of the sequester, and want to use the Chained CPI to offset the cuts. Democrats want to push back the sequester until 2015, and use new revenues to pay for the cuts.?

CNN reporter Dana Bash tweets that Democrats are pushing hard against Republican demands, and are now?saying they will block any bill that includes a three-month delay, part of a ploy to keep Vice President Joe Biden from agreeing to the measure.?

The White House just announced that President Obama will speak in the South Court Auditorium at 1:30 p.m.?

According to the schedule update, Obama will "deliver remarks at an event with middle class Americans," so it doesn't sound like he will be announcing a deal, although reports indicate that a deal is imminent.?

We'll be liveblogging Obama's announcement here >?

CNBC and other news outlets are reporting that the two sides have reached an agreement on the threshold for extending the Bush tax cuts.?

Sam Stein and Ryan Grim have more details on the emerging deal here. Here are some of the key elements, according to their report:

1. The Bush-era tax cuts will be extended permanently to 39.6 percent for individuals earning more than $400,000 and households earning more than $450,000.?That same threshold would be applied for capital gains and dividends, with the top rate going up to 20 percent.?Estimated revenue: $370 billion over 10 years.?

2. ?The estate tax will go up slightly for estates over $5 million, from 35 percent to 40 percent. Estimated revenue: $25 billion in revenue over 10 years.?

3. Personal tax exemptions would be capped at $375,000 for individuals and $425,000 for households. Itemized deductions would be capped at $250,000 and $300,000 respectively. Estimated revenue: $185 billion over 10 years.?

4. A permanent patch in the alternative minimum tax (AMT) and a five-year extension of stimulus tax policies.?

The main sticking point is still what to do about the sequester. Stein and Grim report that both sides are still negotiating the cost of an extension of unemployment benefits and how to pay for a one-year resolution to postpone changes in Medicare payments to doctors.?

john cornyn tweets

Here's a tweet from Doug Heye, an aide to Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor:?

cantor aide tweet

BuzzFeed reporter Rebecca Berg tweets that Democratic sources say liberal Senators, including Al Franken, Sherrod Brown, and others, marched into Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's office this afternoon to voice their dissatisfaction with the deal.?

Just minutes after Obama's remarks, McCain launched into an epic rant on the Senate floor, slamming the President for not taking the fiscal cliff seriously.

"It's time to stop the cheerleading, it's time to stop the campaigning ? the President won," McCain said, slamming his podium for emphasis. "Isn't it time to govern?"?

Obama, McCain said, "laughs and jokes and ridicules Republicans. Why?"?

"That's not the way presidents should lead!"

Speaking on the Senate floor, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says that both sides are "very, very close" to a deal, and that both sides have reached an agreement on the threshold for raising income taxes.?

McConnell urged the Senate to move forward with the deal on taxes, while both sides continue negotiating on a deal to cut spending and avoid the sequester.

"Let's pass the tax relief portion now," McConnell said. "Let's take what's been agreed to and keep moving."?

"We?ll continue to work on finding smarter ways to cut spending but let?s not let that hold up protecting Americans" from tax hikes, he said.?

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's office just announced that no vote will be held tonight on the fiscal cliff.?

The House GOP conference will reportedly meet at 5 p.m.?

Fox News reporter Chad Pergram tweets:?

fiscal cliff tweet

Several House Republican aides are now saying that a vote could still happen tonight, despite Cantor's announcement. Republican sources say members are being told to stay near the Capitol in case of a last-minute fiscal cliff vote.?

While it remains unlikely that a vote will be held tonight, it's worth noting that Republican House leaders moved Sunday to give themselves expedited authority to bring a vote to the floor in the event that the Senate passes a fiscal cliff bill Monday evening.

Arizona Republican Sens. John McCain and John Kyl told reporters that Senate Republicans will likely agree to the deal, which would put off sequestration for two months.?

But while Kyl said he is still holding out hope for a vote tonight, McCain told reporters that he doesn't think there will be a vote tonight.?

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tweets that the Senate's "Morning Business" has been extended until 7 p.m.?

National Journal reports that House Speaker John Boehner has told his caucus to stay close by the Capitol in case the Senate votes on a fiscal cliff deal.?

He ""told us to stick around and stay sober ? semi-sober, anyhow,? Rep. John Carter told NJ.?

News outlets are reporting that Vice President Joe Biden is planning on heading to Capitol Hill at 7 p.m. in order to break a tie if there is a tie on the still tentative fiscal cliff deal.

Meanwhile, the AFL-CIO is urging Democrats not to agree to a deal that raises the tax threshold above $250,000 and allows Republicans to renegotiate on the debt ceiling.?

Biden is expected to arrive at the Capitol around that time.?

Via WaPo:?

According to Democratic aides, Vice President Biden is on his way to the Capitol to explain the details of the pact he negotiated with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and? a vote on the package could be held by 10:30 p.m., beating a midnight deadline. White House officials gave in on the last issue, how to handle estate taxes, yielding to GOP wishes, aides said. The House will begin considering the bill tomorrow, with final passage in the next day or two.

Biden has arrived at the Capitol to convince the rest of the Democratic caucus to do the same.?

Biden has been meeting with Democrats for over an hour in a private meeting. The longer this goes, the more nervousness there will be about whether Dems are really on board.

Harry Reid says there will be a vote tonight, but that they're just waiting for a CBO score.

NRO's Robert Costa says vote could occur between 1-3 AM.

After a long wait, there's action again in the Senate.

Some buzz about a vote before 2 AM.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Atlanta FalconsGetty Images

Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano said Monday that he thinks quarterback Josh Freeman will win Super Bowls over the course of his career, but he stopped short of saying that Freeman will continue to be the team?s starter next season.

Schiano was complimentary of Freeman?s season during his postmortem on the Bucs? 7-9 season, but he also said that he wants to evaluate Freeman before the start of next season to make sure that he?s the right quarterback for the team in the future. Part of that evaluation will be to bring in competition for Freeman in the offseason.

?What I can say is, a 4,000-yard passer, a touchdown record ? there?s a lot of things you say, ?Wow.? Are there things that frustrate you? Yeah. There?s things that frustrate him, too. And I?m not ducking the question, because quite frankly, I really like Josh Freeman. But I want to make sure I don?t get ahead of my skis at all here and really evaluate every single thing to what?s best for this organization,? Schiano said, via the Tampa Bay Times. ?Do I think Josh Freeman is going to win Super Bowls in this league? I do. So, I hope that happens here. But again, at the end of the day, I have to evaluate everything before I can say that?s what we?re doing.?The one thing I do believe in is competition at every spot, including the quarterback so I want to have as many good players on our football team as we can at every single position. It?s a little different in the NFL.?

Freeman was all over the place during the 2012 season. He struggled a little early then went on a five-game spurt where he threw 13 touchdowns and one interception before posting consecutive four interception outings in Weeks 15 and 16. The end result was better than 2011, to be sure, but Freeman remains an athletically gifted but erratic quarterback after four seasons.

Next year will be a big one for the quarterback as it is the final year of the deal he signed as a rookie. If Freeman can?t raise his game, he might not get another deal from the Buccaneers and, if Schiano follows through on his plan, he might not even be their starter next season.
