Small Businesses: How Not To Blog - Blogging Tips

Blogging can be great for small businesses. But there seems to be a tidal wave of bad, boring and pointless blogs surfacing on the internet, and small businesses are amongst the worst offenders. But what are the offenses that offend our eyes most often?

Here are the no-nos that we all see, far too frequently:

Blogging for the sake of Blogging

Blog Tips for Small BusinessesFirst things first, blogging is a business decision, not a necessity. Despite what a lot of the misinformed would have you believe, if your not actively promoting your website, or don?t have the in-house skills to create great content, then blogging isn?t for you.

If your in any techy industry, chances are you should blog. Especially if you?re a specialist online business. A blog can give you the opportunity to get your brand message across, display your expertise and put a human face to your business.

However, if your a one-man-band plumber, with no writing skills or desire to write, blogging might not be the best way to fulfill your business goals

Be business focused ? is blogging the best possible use of your time and resources? Is there any online or offline promotion you could be doing that will provide tangible returns? It?s important to remember that blogging is a long term strategy, a way of connecting with your customers and getting your brand message out there.

Blogging without the foundation of an awesome, well optimized website, established customer base and great writers is almost certainly a waste of time.

Writing for Industry Types, Instead of Consumers

Often a website will write great, industry focused content. And that?s great, to a point. But there comes a time when you need to write for the people that will actually buy your product. You may gain kudos from competitors in your industry, if you produce in-depth content, analyzing topical issues. But are your competitors ever going to buy anything from you?

Find out the questions potential customers are asking and answer them? Visit forums, use Google?s ?Discussions? filter and check out your competitors FAQs. Learn what the people need to know and create content that fills that need. Be sure to optimize the blog post around the question that?s your answering.

Create useful content that has a definitive purpose, and that can drive potential customers to the site.

We Bought a New Boiler!

The minutia of your businesses everyday goings-on is not blog worthy. It?s boring. Unless something major has happened i.e. you?ve won a huge client, hired a industry celebrity, won the lottery etc, we don?t want to know.

As with every post, reason with yourself. Ask the question:

?Will this content inform or entertain, or am I just blogging for the sake of it??.

If the answer is the latter, stop, reroute and go about your day. Wait until you have something interesting to blog about.

Writing Sales Pitches

In a sense, a blog can be a promotional channel. But you shouldn?t promote directly through your blog, if that makes any sense at all. Sure, if there?s a special offer or competition, feel free to write about about. But blatant self-promotion drives readers away, fast. Keep it interesting ? not every post has to sell something.

Boring, Long or Overly Formal Posts

Sometimes, the best blog posts are the shortest. Don?t feel as though as though the company blog is an excuse to show your writing prowess. According to a recent study, only 16% of people read blog posts word for word. So make your sentences short, punchy, and easy to digest.

In my opinion, I think that it is important to remember that you?re not writing a novel. More often than not, you?re simply getting a point across. So make sure your point gets across in the simplest way possible.

No marathon paragraphs either. Try to keep them to 3 lines or less. Highlight the key words, statistics and phrases for the skim readers amongst us and steer clear of overly flowery language. I?m not saying that my way is the only way. Some bloggers write beautifully and are loved for their style.

But for most business applications, the easier to read it is, the better.

And finally?

I always think that blogs should be written by people, not faceless organizations. For general company updates, using the company?s name as the author is fine. But please, allow people to blog under their real names. It adds the human element to your brand, breaking down the fourth wall between businesses and customers.

Do you run a blog for your small business? Disagree with anything I?ve said in this post? Feel free to leave a comment below, and I?ll get back to you as soon as I can.

The day that we finally get to look into those big, round, brown eyes will be the BEST day of our lives.? We want nothing more than to hug and squeeze you right now at this moment, but that time is going to have to wait.? And waiting we will do, until God brings us to you. :)? We love you baby girl!

Gay marriage opponents unite in supposedly liberal France

Kenzo Tribouillard / AFP - Getty Images file

People hold boards reading: "A father, a mother for all the children", "Yes for the family, no to the homophobia", during a protest organized by fundamentalist Christian group Civitas Institute against same-sex marriage on January 29, 2013.

By Annabel Roberts, Correspondent, NBC News

"Une m?re, un mari, un mariage" (One mother, one husband, one marriage): This is the call to arms for those opposed to the legalization of gay marriage and gay adoption in France.

Under this banner thousands are expected to turn out on Saturday for demonstrations that are being organized in every single one of France's 96 regions.

The umbrella group for the anti-camp is called "manif pour tous" (a pun: manif, or demonstration, for everyone as opposed to marriage for everyone). Spokesman Terdual Derville told NBC News it would be a symbolic day, illustrating that opponents "are present everywhere in France."

The group was behind a huge rally in Paris attended by between 340,000 and 800,000 people on January 13th. Saturday's event, according to Derville, is for those who want to demonstrate but perhaps do not have the means to travel to Paris.

So what exactly are they protesting against?

They insist their movement is not homophobic, that it is the legalizaton of gay adoption that they are against as this amounts to the breakdown of the traditional family.

They say children have a fundamental right to have a father and a mother.

"We must think of future generations. Not only of the desires of adults today," Derville told NBC News.

But those in favor have vocal support too.

"Marriage should be a simple contract between two individuals. Let's make it available to all couples eager to make this contract to each other," Christophe Barbier, editor of the influential L'Express weekly news magazine and a supporter of the law, told NBC News.

The opponents, Barbier believes, are "afraid that after civil contracts (between homosexual couples), and now marriage, the next step will be IVF (for lesbian couples) and surrogate pregnancies (for gay men)."

President's pledge
Other countries in Western Europe -- like Belgium and the Netherlands -- have already legalized gay marriage. But nowhere has the opposition been as vocal as in France -- not even in Spain and Portugal, which are predominantly Catholic like France.

This opposition may seem at odds with France's 'liberal' reputation. But Barbier insisted to NBC News: "France is not liberal, neither economically nor socially. France is conservative -- and occasionally revolutionary."

President Francois Hollande can be confident the legislation will pass thanks to his Socialist Party's majority. Legalizing gay marriage was a manifesto pledge during his 2012 election campaign.

According to Barbier, for political reasons the president has to fulfill this pledge: "Francois Hollande needs to deliver on the promises made during his campaign: In the economic field, this is difficult, with social issues, it's easier."

Luckily for him he also appears to have the backing of the majority of French voters.

A recent poll for Atlantico.fr carried out by Ifop found that 63 percent of people in France support the legalization of same-sex marriage. Forty-nine percent supported gay adoption.

This does not diminish the fervor of those opposed. According to a poll cited by "Manif pour Tous" only 6 percent of people see this issue as a priority.

"The priority is the economy, housing and jobs, so politically the president should have the wisdom to renounce this project," said Derville, the group's spokesman.

A poll by Yougov for Le Huffpost (the Huffington Post's French-language edition) backs this up, finding 72 percent feel the debate has already gone on for too long.

Unfortunately for them, the real debate in France's National Assembly has just started (Tuesday) and is due to run for two whole weeks -- including weekends.

(AP) ? British actor Jude Law says he'll be taking part in a time-honored American tradition this weekend: Super Bowl Sunday.

"I follow most sports, so of course I'm aware of it and I'll probably watch it, but I live in London and so I don't follow it that closely. It's more than just a game here, though, right? It's like have a party. Have a dip. Drink some beer," said Law.

When asked if he'll be participating in any tailgate parties when the Baltimore Ravens face off against the San Francisco 49ers, Law admitted he had no clue what "tailgating" meant.

"Really? OK. I believe you. I don't know what you're talking about. I'm not even gonna say," he said, laughing.

Luckily his "Side Effects" co-star, Channing Tatum, said he'd teach Law about Americans football traditions. He said he was heading to his New Orleans bar, Saints and Sinners for the weekend and was hoping for a good game.

"I really kind of want Baltimore to pull it out for Ray (Lewis) because it's a sweet story but I really like San Francisco's quarterback and whatnot so I think it's gonna be a really good game," said Tatum.

The actors joined their castmates, including Catherine Zeta-Jones and Rooney Mara, at the New York premiere of their psychological thriller "Side Effects" on Thursday. The film opens in U.S. theaters next Friday.

Turns out Law and Tatum have more in common than Steven Soderbergh's latest film: They've both been named People's Sexiest Man Alive.

"Yeah, there's a complete handshake and like a password and whatnot. I can't tell you any of those. I know what your next question is. It's not gonna happen. They come and kill you ? all of them. All of them together come and actually murder you. Yeah, everybody. They come and take you in the night and you disappear if you explain any of those secrets," joked Tatum, the current title holder.

Fireworks cause deadly highway collapse in China

BEIJING (AP) ? A truckload of fireworks intended for Lunar New Year celebrations went off Friday in a massive, deadly explosion that destroyed part of an elevated highway in central China, sending vehicles plummeting 30 meters (about 100 feet) to the ground.

State TV broadcaster CCTV said eight people were confirmed dead and 11 injured after seven vehicles were recovered from the wreckage. The death toll appeared likely to rise: The official Xinhua News Agency said the collapse smashed and buried at least 25 vehicles.

Earlier reports by China National Radio and some other outlets of 26 people killed were later removed from websites, without explanation.

An 80-meter (260-foot) stretch of a major east-west highway collapsed in Mianchi county in Henan province. It scattered blackened chunks of debris and shattered the windows of a nearby truck stop.

A truck driver interviewed on CCTV said he was only 20 meters (yards) away from the explosion.

"I heard a huge bang and immediately braked. I saw small fireballs falling down one by one," said the unidentified truck driver, whose truck windshield was smashed from the impact of the blast.

"I then heard the sounds of clanking and exploding for five to six minutes," the driver said. "My face was covered in dust."

Photos posted online by Xinhua showed a stretch of elevated highway gone, with one truck's back wheels perched at the edge of a shorn-off section of the highway. Other photos showed firefighters below spraying water on scorched hunks of concrete, wrecked trucks and flattened shipping containers.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the explosion. It occurred about 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of Luoyang, an ancient capital of China known for grottoes of Buddhist statues carved from limestone cliffs.

Fireworks are an enormously popular part of Chinese Lunar New Year festivities. To meet the demand, fireworks are made, shipped and stored in large quantities, sometimes in unsafe conditions.

A result is periodic catastrophe: In 2006, on the first day of the Lunar New Year, a storeroom of fireworks exploded at a temple fair in Henan, killing 36 people and injuring dozens more. In 2000, an unlicensed fireworks factory in southern China exploded, killing 33 people, including 13 primary and secondary school students working there.

After school massacre, Newtown residents urge stricter gun control

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - Parents and neighbors of the children killed in last month's Connecticut school shooting implored state lawmakers at a hearing on Wednesday to ban the powerful rifle and high-capacity magazines used in the massacre.

As parents, first responders and town officials spoke at the Newtown high school, many in the audience of about 600 people gave standing ovations and wept.

"We lost our son Benjamin" to an "unstable, suicidal individual who had access to a weapon that has no place in a home," said David Wheeler. "Military-style assault weapons belong in an armory under lock and key. They do not belong in a weapons safe in a home."

Legislators in Washington and around the United States are grappling with how to keep Americans safe from gun violence in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed 20 children and six adults.

Gun control advocates argue that the AR 15-type assault weapon and high-capacity magazines used by the gunman do not belong in the hands of civilians. Gun rights advocates say that any attempt to ban assault weapons or high-capacity magazines is a prelude to stripping Americans of their constitutional right to bear arms.

President Barack Obama has called on Congress to approve an overhaul of the nation's gun laws, including an expansion of background checks for gun sales. On Wednesday, former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords - who was shot in the head in a mass shooting two years ago in Tucson - urged her former colleagues to act.

Many of the proposals made by Connecticut lawmakers, including an assault weapons ban and expanding background checks, are similar to bills under consideration also in Washington.

But while previous hearings held in the state capitol of Hartford have featured strong disagreement, especially on gun control, most of those testifying in the hearing in Newtown shared the view that assault weapons do not belong in the hands of civilians.

"I cannot agree that weapons such as the Bushmaster can play a legitimate role in a society that first and foremost seeks to keep its citizens safe," said Newtown first selectman Pat Llodra, the town's top elected official.

But there were dissenting voices as well.

Nicole Hockley, whose son Dylan died in the massacre, said she hoped the tragedy would help inspire changes in how society cares for the mentally ill.

She likened guns to high-speed cars: "In the hands of an expert, it is safe and possibly thrilling. In the hands of a person with mental imbalances, emotional immaturity or recklessness, it is a death machine."

Peter Paradis' stepdaughter, 29-year-old Rachel Davino, was one of six educators killed in the massacre. He said he supported logical solutions to gun violence, like more background checks, but he said he thought the shooting has been used to satisfy political agendas.

"If we had responsible gun ownership this wouldn't have happened," Paradis said. He said better education for gun owners, as well as stationing armed guards in schools, would make people safer.

"It's a right given to us, but it's also a privilege," he said.
