Spurs' Ginobili to undergo surgery on broken hand (AP)

SAN ANTONIO ? Spurs guard Manu Ginobili will have surgery on his broken left hand and is expected to be out at least two months after his latest injury.

Ginobili tweeted Wednesday that he'll have a plate screwed onto his shooting hand Thursday. He broke his fifth metacarpal, below his pinkie, during the second quarter of a loss at Minnesota on Monday night.

"Not thrilled," Ginobili tweeted.

Ginobili was averaging 17.4 points a game, and San Antonio won't easily make up for losing its leading scorer who has overtaken Tim Duncan as the emotional and offensive centerpiece of the four-time champion Spurs.

Last season, after the 34-year-old sprained his elbow on the eve of the playoffs, Ginobili struggled through the first round wearing a bulky sleeve as Memphis upset the 61-win Spurs. Three years ago, Ginobili missed the postseason entirely with a bad ankle.

Although San Antonio's supporting cast this season is among the youngest of the Duncan era, the fate and fortunes of the Spurs still squarely rest with Ginobili, Tony Parker and Duncan, who will turn 36 in April and might be playing his final season.

Ginobili injured his hand in the season's fifth game when he fouled Anthony Tolliver as he jumped to shoot the ball.

"Six to eight weeks is the most common things that's been thrown around, so I assume that's what it is unless the docs figure out differently tomorrow," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

The Spurs host Golden State on Wednesday night.

Ginobili's injury is forcing the Spurs to put backup Gary Neal in uniform ahead of schedule after the second-year shooting guard had his appendix removed during training camp. Popovich said Neal would have certainly first played a few D-League games otherwise, but that's a luxury the Spurs can no longer afford.

"We figured we might as well go ahead and throw him in to the fire," Popovich said.

Time stamp bug exposes photos on locked iPhone

Even though my iPhone is locked, I was able to show a colleague this photo on my phone after setting the clock to a date in the past.

A Canadian tech consultant has discovered a bug in iOS 5 that makes the photos on a locked iPhone viewable, if the phone's clock is set to the past.

It's easy to test. On an iPhone running iOS 5, you can access the camera, even if the phone is locked, by double-clicking the home button. But if you try to view the photo gallery, you are blocked with a message that says, "Unlock your iPhone to see all of your photos and videos."

Now go into your phone settings, and change the date to some point in the past. And at this point, after the phone has been locked again, you will be able to see the photos that have been taken since that date.

"If your iPhone's clock ever rolls back, then all images with time stamps newer than your iPhone's clock will be viewable from your locked phone," Ade Barkah wrote on his blog this weekend.

Since most of us have the date and time automatically set, an obvious question would be why the clock would ever roll backward.

Someone traveling across time zones could accidentally set the date incorrectly, notes Barkah, who discovered the problem and blogged about it from the road on a Canada-to-Argentina motorcycle trip. And there's always the potential for an iPhone glitch: "E.g., a software or hardware issue could reset your iPhone's clock to epoch time--iPhone's 'zero' time at midnight January 1, 2001. In this case, all your images are exposed," he writes.

There also could be an infrastructure error, such as if the phone is automatically synced from an erroneous external time source like the cell phone company, Barkah suggests. And, finally, if an app is ever able to change the clock, that could be a problem, he adds.

"The point to all this is that Apple should not rely on a simple time stamp to restrict image access," he writes. "Changing the iPhone's clock--[forward or backward]--should not affect its security. We can't guarantee the clock will always monotonically [move] forward, and when it doesn't, the system should fail-secure."

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

"I prefer using a GPS unit, not my phone, when I'm driving around LA. The best traffic I've seen is via Google Maps, since it shows surface traffic for streets in Hollywood. Navteq HD Radio maps (which is what I use now) doesn't show this kind of information: it's only for highways. There aren't any highways between Hollywood and Beverly Hills, but there's a ton of traffic, which you're blind to when using a standalone GPS. Is there an easy way to get surface traffic data on a GPS unit rather than forking out for a phone / tablet and $30/month data plan? Thanks!"

Former Mexico soldier sentenced for aiding cartels

MEXICO CITY, Dec 30 (Reuters) - A former soldier in the Mexican army was sentenced to 25 years in prison for aiding drug cartels, the attorney general's office said on Friday.

Reymundo Morales of the Mexican infantry was arrested two years ago and found guilty of passing information to drug cartels, the attorney general's office said in a statement.

Local media said that Morales and several colleagues in uniform were passing information about security operations to the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel, led by Joaquin 'Shorty' Guzman, Mexico's most-wanted man.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has said he is determined to root out corruption among the security forces as they take on violent drug cartels in a battle that has left more than 46,000 people dead since he took office in 2006.

Few officials have been convicted for crimes to date, though early last month, fourteen soldiers were sentenced to jail for firing at a family group in 2007 in one of the more prominent cases of wrongdoing among the security services.
